I 'I 9 idaeols bro The Miami Herald Tuesday March 19 1985 4C Cardinal Gibbons has newfound talent iritTT ') i1 rt By PHIL TAYLOR Herald Sports Water Frank Humber and Hubert Power will tell you that there really as much difference between their hometown of Corner Brook Newfoundland and their new home Fort Lauderdale as you might assume Corner Brook High much different from Cardinal Gibbons High and their Canadian friends like the same things as their American friends movies parties video games But Power and Humber concede that there are a few differences not the least of which is that if they were in Corner Brook right now they would be throwing snowballs instead of baseballs are about three to four feet of snow on the ground back home right now pretty Humber said even be able to find the baseball field much less play on That's one of the reasons Humber and Power both senior righthanders are glad they are pitching for Cardinal Gibbons In light of the fact that Humber 6-0 with 64 strikeouts in 37 innings and Power 3-0 have combined for nine of the 10 victories for Cardinal Gibbons (10-2) Redskins Coach George Petik is pretty pleased as well and Hubert have been a pleasure for me as a coach both on the mound and Petik said records speak for themselves but the records tell you about what hard workers they are or how popular they are with their teammates or how well they have made the adjustment to moving Two years ago Power and Humber were teammates on a Corner Brook baseball team when John Koons now a Cardinal Gibbons assistant coach brought the American Legion team he coached to Canada play a series of games was playing in an unlimited Koons said was a 16-year-old playing with see them again I think this whole experience the chance to travel and see someplace new is going to be good for both Frank and Koons moved from Virginia to Fort Lauderdale last summer and after looking at several schools in the area decided to send his son Humber and Power to Cardinal Gibbons all been kind of like a dream come true for Power said no such thing as high school baseball in Newfoundland because the weather is still too cold We have town teams in the summer but we only play about a 15 to 20-game Humber and Power will be better able to develop their talent now that they can play virtually a year-round schedule and Petik believes there is a great deal of talent to develop can definitely pitch for a college team and we feel he may be a major-league Petik said "He has a fastball in the mid-80s a slider and a curve and a very mature and poised pitcher for his age He thinks several pitches ahead setting up hitters The college coach who gets Frankie is a lucky At 6 feet 215 pounds Humber is more of a power pitcher than Power But Petik said whatever the 5-10 150-pound Power lacks in strength he makes up in determination has a toughness about him on the Petik said has a lot of guts He gets a look in his eyes that just tells you got a fight on your hands got a lot of street savvy You can tell that adjusting to pitching down here overwhelm Both pitchers agree that there have been no overwhelming adjustments either on the field or in living with the Koons family Possibly the biggest one they had to make was in sharing a fold-out bed in the houses and I were pretty close friends Power said smiling now I guess closer than JOE IMKUS JR Miami Herald Staff Cardinal Canadian club: pitchers Hubert Power Frank Humber Cardinal Gibbons first baseman told him that was fine but no college scouts were ever going see him playing in Corner Brook We eventually worked it out with his family to have him come live with me and I became his legal Humber came to live with Koons in Virginia two summers ago and pitched on his American Legion team Last summer Corner Brook coach Steve Angeline told Koons about anoth er of his players Power is the youngest of 12 children and I understood that his father thought it was time for him to start earning a living and that school Koons said really wanted to go to college and I wanted to give him the opportunity Since I loved having Frankie so much I decided to take Hubert too sight unseen and glad I did like part of the family and Hubert is fast becoming Humber and Power are just as pleased with their new situation although leaving their families and homes was difficult was on the fence for a Humber said I really want to go to college in the United States and it just came down to the fact that I would never get a baseball scholarship playing in Corner always wanted to see said Power miss my two pieces of hardware runner-up or otherwise since 1953 And even though Broward took second place it proved it no longer is second-rate Both teams led the eventual state champions after three quarters of play and composure not talent was the difference No wonder Westminster Coach LeRoy Schwab will remember this as a season of success not failure he said much so Two state finalists from one
