coming from the other not your imagination WIOD (610 AM) has gone stereo becoming the second local station to begin transmitting an AM stereo signal since the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) gave its approval to the concept about two years ago Spanish-Ianguage WCMQ (1220 AM) has been broadcasting in stereo for about a year Its format is mostly music so the transition to stereo seems a natural progression A new Palm Beach music station WOOO (1190 AM) is scheduled to begin broadcasting in stereo early next year But format is mostly talk and sports with the exception of the songs played on weekday morning show and Stew Saturday morning oldies rock show Why would a talk station need a stereo signal? radio is struggling right now with more than 70 percent of radio listeners tuning in to FM" said Dave Gibson chief engineer for WIOD and WAIA (973 FM) want to improve it as much as we can In rebuilding the station technically recently we felt (AM stereo should be a natural next step gives talk more ambiance a more open sound When we have guests in the studio one will be heard through the left channel another on the right while the host will be in the middle To the listener it sounds like the conversation is going on right in the living room" Both WIOD and WCMQ-AM are using the Motorola C-Quam AM Stereo System a system used by some 400 AM stations across the country To receive and AM stereo signals you must have a C-Quam AM Stereo receiver Many new cars are equipped with the system Radio Shack sells an AMFM stereo car radio that receives the C-Quam signal for about $140 and a compact AM stereo tuner that plugs into your existing home stereo system for about $50 If your stereo dealer carry the product he can order one from the manufacturer If many more AM stations switch to stereo and radio manu- WEDNESDAY JULY 16 1986 PIUME DR0ADCAST (Shaded area indicate moviei) I borrowed an AM stereo receiver for a few days and plugged it into my home stereo system And you know WIOD did sound better than it used to The music on morning show has a fuller quality and even the talk sounds richer and clearer than that of other AM stations These days more than ever people are interested in upgrading their home and car stereo systems My theory is anything that improves the sound of radio AM or FM is bound to catch on eventually especially if the cost to the consumer is reasonable Etc After three months of operating without a permanent head WIOD-AMWAIA-FM has a new vice presidentgeneral manager Robert Reich former vice president of sales for EZ Communications in Washington DC officially began his new job this week If you have car trouble Friday and a man stops to help you look closely it just might be the mayor of Miami During rush hours that day (either in the morning or afternoon it been determined yet) Miami Mayor Xavier Suarez will be riding in new a red Jeep Comanche equipped to provide stranded motorists with mechanical assistance or gasoline Suarez will be assisted in his highway heroics by traffic reporter A dream of sorts will come true for WNWS afternoon talk show host Steve Kane Tuesday night when he acts as guest ring announcer for the World Wrestling Federation bouts at the James Knight Center in Miami Kane a wrestling aficionado has previously had wrestlers as guests on his program and will again Tuesday afternoon before the fight when he will act as host to wrestler King Kong Bundy and his manager Skip Herman and Jim McBean morning announcers at WSHE (1035 FM) will take their show on the road again Thursday From 6 to 10 am Herman and McBean will broadcast from Hubcap Heaven a hubcap dealership located on SR 441 between County Line Road and Hallandale Beach Boulevard in Hollywood Also on site will be Michael Talbot of Miami Vice be judging a contest in which a lucky car will be selected to in an upcoming Vice episode Listeners are invited to audition their cars but beware the winning car will be blown up before the cameras Dave Gibson: gives talk more ambiance facturers produce more AM receivers AM stereo could eventually become as widely accepted as FM But with AM stereo technology still in its early stages some station engineers are hesitant or even skeptical about its worth have a lot of problems with the C-Quam said John Morris chief engineer for WNWS (790 AM) and WLYF (1015 FM) Morris was chief engineer for WGBS-AM (before it merged with WNWS) which broadcast in stereo over another system until it switched from music to a talk format saw no purpose in broadcasting in AM stereo after that Talk in stereo is almost like a gimmick with the host in the left speaker and the caller in the right Right now we see no purpose in it If they ever get it to the quality of FM stereo then I guess have to switch to stereo AM like everyone sad thing about this is for the last 30 years people have been laughing at AM saying not high-quality said Mitch Wein chief engineer for WINZ (940 AM) and 95 INZ (WINZ 949 FM) AM stereo could sound as good as FM if car radio manufacturers would put more money into the production of their AM receivers AM stereo sounds pretty good it will definitely help AM radio But it will take a while before it catches PR1UE CABLE PAY-TV Sit-ins for Pauley named TV Tidbits Radio Highlights Sandy Payton 10 am WIOD (AM 610)
