gripping look at mental illness and the bond between two Philadelphia-born veterans Movies of this genre (David and Lisa and the television film Sybil come to mind) walk a fine line between sensationalizing the delusions of the sick person and leaving them totally unexplained In Birdy Parker and screenwriters Sandy kroopf and Jack Behr have created a powerful adaptation actually a reconception of William 1978 novel Instead of a stream-of-consciousness narrative of a shell-shocked psychotic who thinks a bird we are shown the dynamics between his stronger buddy Al and the stunned Herald Many of the rock bands California has recently launched onto the national scene offer some variation of the heavy-metal sound but Animotion has emerged from Los Angeles with a mixture of tech-no-pop that emphasizes synthesizers rather than screaming guitars The six-piece band's first single Obsession is steadily climbing the Top 10 charts Animotion will perform tonight at Summers on the Beach in Fort Lauderdale Although the music has been thrown into the techno-sound category vocalistguitarist Bill Wadhams feels its members have more to offer all grew up on rock roll and soul music and all doing is playing it on recently developed equipment The reason that we may sound is because 1985 and the machines using are definitely high technology I think since we still have a lot of guitar sounds with live bass and drums that our music is more When thinking of a name for the band singer Astrid Plane came up with something the band could relate its music to is the combination season in War Memorial Auditorium Emerson program was not necessarily dull but his conducting was more routine than inspired his soloist Aldo Ciccolini was at less than his considerable best and the playing fell below its sometimes higher standard of technique and style As an exponent of the music of Carlos Surinach the Spanish-born composer now living in Miami Buckley has introduced several of his scores to the repertory The Concerto for Orchestra which opened this concert is a compact pungent piece of work cast in a pattern of aggressive end movements and an introspective slow section juxtaposing piccolos and dark winds The last movement has tremendous vitality and the astringent wit typical of the composer but Buckley give it all its intensity and insistent drive and the intonation left a lot to be desired It might have gone better if Surinach a skilled conductor in his own right had been asked to direct it as there is no substitute for a composer-conductor recreating his own music The sense of re-creation in fact was precisely what was missing in most of Tuesday performances notably in lethargic handling of La Valse But then not sure I need the fingers of one hand to count the conductors and orchestras who can pull this off It has a dreamily gauzy texture yet a vertiginous violence unique in music performance lacked just about everything color verve translucence and sweep Nor did Nights in the Gardens of Spain or Symphonic Variations fare especially well either Ciccolini the Italian pianist who has done some fairly distinguished playing in South Florida was walking stiffly as if his back hurt and held back in his playing He can play cleanly and with a good deal of incisive clarity sometimes with glittering brilliance But his tone often lacked solidity of dynamic impact and was brighter than usual on the Boesendorfer instrument he was playing The cool dry sound right for dusky nocturne and the orchestra rather than conjuring the amorous aura played ebarsely approach to the Franck too was less spontaneous than assiduous though there were beautiful moments The whole performance however was on the slow side conducting essentially stodgy and fingers not always unerring He tended to slow the quieter passages to a crawl and hurry the heroic ones out of balance Better luck next season when he returns as soloist with the Miami Chamber
