retained control of the Senate Tuesday to give President Reagan a congressional power base for two more years But Democrats keyed by the apparent ouster of Illinois Sen Charles Percy by US Rep Paul Simon trimmed the GOP lead by two seats from 55-45 to 53-47 a summary of each race: Alabama Incumbent Democrat Howell Heflin 63 defeated GOP challenger former US Rep Albert Lee Smith Jr 53 Alaska With the support of labor and the oil industry incumbent Republican Ted Stevens 60 is expected to defeat the Democratic nominee former state Attorney General John Havelock 52 Arkansas Democratic incumbent David Pryor 50 defeated GOP challenger US Rep Ed Bethune 48 With 50 percent of the vote in pryor led 57 percent to 43 percent Colorado William Armstrong 47 the GOP incumbent overwhelmed Democratic challenger state Lt Gov Nancy Dick 54 Delaware Incumbent Democrat Joseph Biden Jr 41 routed his GOP challenger former state House Majority Leader John Burris 38 With all precincts reporting Biden won 60 percent of the vote to 40 percent for Burris Georgia Incumbent Democrat Sam Nunn 46 routed his GOP challenger Jon Michael Hicks a 32-year-old teacher Idaho Incumbent Republican James A McClure 59 easily retained his seat against an inexperienced and underfinanced Democrat 49-year-old Pete Busch With 6 percent of the precincts reporting McClure led 79 percdht to 20 percent Illinois Percy was running for the Senate Puerto Rico Former Gov Rafael Hernandez Colon took an early lead Tuesday in his bid to unseat two-term Gov Carlos Romero Barcelo Washington Speaker Norman Bangerter 51 Democrat Wayne Owens a Democrat Booth Gardner heir to a congressman for the right to timber fortune and the Pierce Countv long-time Democratic Gov Scott (Tacoma) executive scored an upset over Spellman who he had called ineffective Indiana Robert Orr 66 won a second four-year term by defeating state Sen Wayne.
