Before wunding up his winners role at Paramount Studios, Melvyn took time out to discuss his movie career, describing many of his picture roles as what has become known as suave, comedy parts. A lot of those comedies were fun, but when you do the same thing over and over again, it gets tiresome. The last nine or ten years in television and plays have been rewarding to me. I've done some exciting parts and we had time to work on them. A serious illness was responsible for part of Douglas absence from movies.

Douglas' role in The Winners Is that of a rancher he describes as being from a past generation. Wearing his hair long and grey, with a mustache to match.

Douglas doesnt appear as the suave character remembered movie fans. With his role completed, Douglas returns to New York for a television show and conferences regarding a season of reportory theater. Henry Fonda Not Looking For Play Now HOLLYWOOD (UPD Ilenry Fonda, a longtime commuter between Broadway stage roles and Hollywood movies, will not appear on the legitimate stage this Fall for the first time In several years. I'm not looking for a play this season, said Fonda during a rehearsal break from Spencer's Mountain, the movie in which he stars for Warner Brothers. Ive done three plays In the last three years, he explained. And Ive only been away from the theater for one year In the last 14. Fondas preference for a stage appearance each season has always overshadowed his desire to appear in pictures.

Trefers Theater I prefer the thsater, he said. New York is home. But I dont mean that to be critical of this medium. Theres more personal satisfaction for me on the stage." Some actors prefer stage plays because of theater audiences which they claim stimulates a performance. Fonda places less importance on audience and more emphasis on technique.

Its not the audience, he said. "In a play you rehearse and then play It from beginning to end. in a movie it's bits and pieces. Good scripts are also high on Henrys list of considerations before taking a role. Recognises Good Script When you read a script you either get excited about it or not and find something you can contribute," he said.

I think youre awfully lucky to find scripts you want to do in whatever medium you want to work. Fonda, who says he's not a compulsive worker, has another movie tentatively scheduled this year, then hopes for a fishing holiday with his son, Peter. Peter is also in Hollywood. The young man is playing his first motion picture role after having made a stage debut. Another of Henrys offspring, daughter Jane, has starred In pictures and plays.

By Joseph Finnigan UPI Hollywood Correspondent HOLLYWOOD (LTD Melvyn Douglas is back making a Holly- Wood picture after being away for years working in plays and television shows. Resides In New' York Since leaving here for Broad- Hollywood Shorts By James Bacon AP Movie-TV Writer HOLLYWOOD UP) A scene inspired by Marilyn Monroes famed nude bathing sequence in her scrapped movie will be In an upcoming show. Actress Jo Morrow, a strikingly beautiful redhead, donned a blonde wig and little else to do a takeoff on Monroe for television's 77 Sunset Strip. Miss Morrow, 21, plays a movie star in the segment and theres little doubt that its Marilyn with maybe a little Jayne Mansfield tossed in. Key scene is one in which she Is interviewed by reporters while reposing au naturel in a sunken pool. For Jo, the role Is a major break for a girl who was the victim of one of the crudest vendettas yet.

In 1959 Jo got court approval of a Columbia Pictures contract with unique calorie clause. A statuesque redhead standing five feet eight and measuring 36-23-26, her contract required that her weight not exceed 132 pounds else the contract could be voided. The calorie clause, of course, was the work of press agents, not lawyers, but it was legal. Jo had no trouble making the weight. Then In a routine career move she dropped her agent and got another.

That move was followed later by getting out of her Columbia contract, also a routine career deal. The studio said weight had nothing to do with it. But the disgruntled agent called a trade paper and said Jo got bounced because she was too fat. The item was printed. rhotogrphers immediately shot cheesecake photos of her proving the agents charge false.

But she didnt get work for a year. This is a malicious town, 6ays Jo. Someone who doesnt like you can drop a line casually to the effect that Shes a good actress and a beautiful girl, but shes got a weight problem. You cant imagine how much this can hurt. The phones Just stop ringing.

IIOLLYWOD IT) Actress Sandra Dee is back scrubbing floors again at Universal-International. The blonde actress, one of the top 10 at the boxoffice, is in Tammy and the Doctor. She had just finished 'If a Man Answers with her husband, Bobby Darin, in which she played a sexpot dressed in gorgeous clothes. I thought I had really grown up on the screen at last, she says, but ths Tammy pictures are too successful to quit, so now Im working in a hospital scrubbing the floors, changing the sheets and the whole ja2z while romancing Peter Fonda who plays a doctor. murl troxel, editor Mimsy Farmer Has Come A Long Way HOLLYWOOD TPD Starlet Mimsy Farmer is appearing in her first picture role, having come a long way since she carried rabbits for an itinerant clown.

Mimsy, a 17-year-old Hollywood high school student, was cast by Warner Brothers in Spencers Mountain" with Henry Fonda. She plays a citified girl who chases a country boy played by James MacArthur. One look at Mimsy, and Mao-Arthur shouldn't be expected to run very fast. Miss Farmers previous show business experience consisted of small parts In television and an extras bit in The Absent Minded Professor where audiences got a fleeting glance of her back. After that, she had no place to go but up in movies.

Mimsys performances before Spencers Mountain are miniscule when compared to her career as a caretaker for rabbits. Miss Farmer is known as a deft handler of bunnies for a magician who entertained at kiddie birthday parties. Only one black mark appears on her record. In a moment of nervousness, she once dropped a rabbit on its head. Like many newcomers to pic-luitr.

Mimsy was asked to change her first name. The director wanted me to change my name because he said it will be too young when Im older, she explained. But I don't want to and a lot of people have backed me up. Miss Farmer's real first name is, Merle, after an uncle. However, nobody calls her Merle except formal school teachers.

business when she travels. Its very easy to do because Im mostly alienated even when T'm In it, she explains. I go to parties and people want me to sing. I Just wont sing unless Im on stage. I never read the movie columns, or gossip columns of any kind.

I do read the notices for the Broadway openings. Theres too much happening of real importance in the world to bother with trivia. She attributes her attitude about show business to the fact that she grew up in it. Sandra was born in San Francisco but moved to Los Angeles as a child after her fathers death. Her mother, who had always wanted to be an actress, enroled her daughter In drama, school when Sandra was only five.

I took singing and dancing lessons, too. I've been at show business ever since. And you know something? The only training I ever liked was in classical singing something that I have yet to do professionally. Sandra, in her early 20s, Is a slender, curvy elfin, five-feet-three. She sews, cooks and is a good enough artist to have one of her schoolgirl entries taken on national tour with the National Scholastic Art Competiion.
