News as they should Three presidents of the United States Roosevelt Taft and Wilson rave vetoed a literacy test for immi grants to the United States despite the fact that three congresses have passed the bill without much oppo sition We take it that the people approve restricted immigration or else they would have been heard from at the time congress was endeavoring to prescribe stricter rules for the ad mission of aliens We hope that con gress will again pass such a bill and that the president will sign it The United States is in part responsible for the plots against this government This country ought to be a haven for the oppressed of other lands but al iens should not be admitted faster than they can be assimilated Tuesday Evening Subscribers desiring the address of their paper has appealed to the management of the Carolina North Western for better schedule facilities between this jity and Lenoir The sdhedule is changed rather often but if the management would move the even ing train up a couple of hours it would please a large number of pat rons As it is the train leaves here too late for Lenoir We doubt very much if many Hick ory people realize the great advan tage the Chamber of Commerce rooms are to the business interests of Hick ory and Catawba county With an overhead expense for rent fuel etc of $2000 per month the offices are always open to meetings of all kinds That the rooms are used very fre quently is in evidence every day al most sometimes two or three meet ings being in session at the same time B'ides the directors room is a convenient meeting place for business conferences between manu facturers and visitors coming to town and desiring information that can be secured between trains The Record was glad to announce that the Hickory Manufacturing Company had decided to rebuild a arger plant on the site of that de stroyed by fire last November That is the sort of business that Hickory wants It has a large payroll and its employes are above the average in intelligence and public spirit We congratulate the whole community on this good fortune In the Catawba Rural Credits As sociation the farmers of this section have as the Record has pointed out frequently the best workable plan of co operation ever devised The same principle applied to the cities has en abled millions of people to own their homes it will be of similar improvement bonds need to be told that they are wast ing good money in carrying the in junction case to the supreme court That tribunal is not in the habit of writing opinions to please a minority who would stand in the way of pro gress and the court has practically held that good roads are public nec essities The legislature passed the enabling act a majority of Caldwell citizens voted for the bonds the com mission of Aleiinder have ap proved them and a superior court judge has upheld the 'commissioners The case as it will be viewed by the supreme court is not merely local Millions of dollars in bonds have been issued in the same manner as those of Alexander and the court would do nothing to throw a shadow across the legality of these other issues Our friends in Alexander who have been spending their good money fighting progress would do well to saVe a little of it to pay interest on 4he bonds The announcement in the correspondence from Lenoir yester day that thirty one engineers and surveyors of the Southern Power Company are near Collettsville look ing over power sites on riv er is of particular interest to Hick ory Our correspondent thinks that an electric IJne eventually will be constructed between Lenoir and Mor ganton and between Lenoir and Blow ing Rock The Southern Power Company would not be securing valuable water power sites merely for the purpose of furnishing power to mills The Blowing Rock country is naturally the finest in the United States and some time it will draw thousands of visitors each summer We want those visitors to come by Hickory If there is anything that Hick ory can do in the development of the Blowing Rock section we are sure Hickory citizens will be glad to learn what it is An electric line from Hickory to Blowing Rock handling of foreign problems had been half as successful as his handling of domes tic problems he would have few crit ics in the United States The Sim mons Underwood tariff law with the exception of a few schedules has proved acceptable to the business men of the country and the new currency act creating the federal reserve bank ing system will forev' remain a monument to the administration The administration has drawn critic ism on account of the way Mr Wil liams conducts the treasury depart ment but that is a matter with which the general public has little to do On the whole the Wilson tion has carried out a domestic program and should not be overlooked The foreign policy however has not measured up to expectations No doubt Mr Bryan is responsible in great part for this No government can expect to carry on correspond ence with a foreign power when ev erybody knows that nothing would be done and until Mn Bryan resigned foreign Mr Dumba in particular were given to understand that the protests were for the con sumption of the back home Probably if Mr Wilson had beep free to select for secretary of state some man who was fitted by training and stability for this responsible post instead of having to pay a political debt he would have escaped being placed irr the attitpde of a scold Maybe theUniled States would have been taken seriously As it was we started off on the assumption that all we had £0 do was to direct a few nice words to the other nations in order to get results We have form ed the habit Whether Germany was compelled to abandon her submarine campaign because of the traps made for the capture of these undersea boats or whether the United States forced her to abandoii the campaign we do not know The fact remains that the submarine campaign has been aban doned for the present That is some thing to be grateful for With regard to Mexico we never have believed that Carranza or any body else could restore order in that country And the United States which claims to be responsible for law and order on this hemisphere is bound to do something We have said the Mexicans could work out their 'own salvation but we have butted in When government breaks down the United States should go to the relief of Mexico sake of Quality Groceries OUR WHOLE TIME AND ATTENTION IS GIVEN TO THE TASK APPEASING THE PUBLIC APPETITE!
