Snow fell across much of the Great Lakes region and travelers in western upper Michigan and much of western Pennsylvania were warned of hazardous road conditions.

The southward surge of cold air in the north central portion of the nation brought snow from the central Rockies through Kansas and into northern Missouri. A travel and stockmen's advisories were issued for northern Kansas through the day. Widely scattered showers were reported through the lower half of the Mississippi Valley. Rain was moving northward along the Oregon coast. There was fog from the Texas Gulf Coast into the lower Mississippi Valley.

Locally dense fog was reported through southwestern Louisiana, and a travel advisory was issued for that area until mid-morning. Early morning temperatures ranged from seven at International Falls, to 73 at Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Court Judge Garth Bates says he received $2,900 on July 16 in $100 bills as partial payment for selling a car and not as a bribe. Bates, 61, spent seven hours on the witness stand Wednesday denying charges he accepted a $59,000 bribe to keep a defendant on trial in his court of out prison.

The 10-day old trial was expected to go to the jury today. Testimony from a police officer last week revealed he found 29 $100 bills in Bates' coat pocket when Bates and a friend, Ed Riklin, 46, were arrested July 16. M6-55M Astro- Graph Page TEXAS BRIEFS Osol Riklin is the alleged go-between for Bates and Nukie Fontenot, on trial in Bates' court on robbery charges, Riklin also is charged in the case but will be tried separately. Bates testified Wednesday he accompanied Riklin to a shopping center parking lot where Riklin said he expected to receive payment for a debt and that "the person paying him was the type of person who might pull a hijacking." Bates said after Riklin received the money, Riklin paid him $5,000 for a car and gave another $10,000 to Bates' accountant, James Brown, as a downpayment on a condominium Riklin wanted to buy from Bates. Fontenot, 38, a pawnbroker, testified last week he delivered $59,000 to Riklin on the parking lot and had worked with authorities in making the bribery case against Bates and Riklin. Fontenot was scheduled to go on trial in Bates' court Aug. 18 in a robbery For Friday, Nov.

Your Birthday Six hurt in blast at Houston plant Nov. 12, 1976 HOUSTON (AP) Six men were critically injured with second and third degree burns when an explosion and fire ripped through the Rohn and Hass Texas plant. Listed in critical condition today at two hospitals were Mau- rlllo Baeza Gonzales, Severe Soliz, Jesus Meza, Merced Ortega, Ignasio Rangel and Robert Josev.

All the men except Josey were reported to be employes of Thermo Tech which has had several crews working on insulation projects at the plant. A Thermo Tech spokesman said cause of the explosion has not The explosion occurred near a Rohn and Haas chemical manufacturing plant near the Houston Ship Channel. SLOCUM, Tex. (AP)-Officers in this deep East Texas town today were investigating the shooting death of a young woman who was found in the burning bedroom of her home Wednesday. Police said the body of Mrs.

Debra Joyce Bobbins, dressed in a nightgown, was found near her bed by firemen after a MOSQUITO'S SEX NEW YORK (AP) If you've ever wondered how to tell the sex of a mosquito, just listen. Robbins had apparently had been shot once in the head. Mrs. Bobbins' husband, James, told police he had left the house for work at 5:30 In the morning and his wife was still in bed. The couple had been married five months. Today would have been her 20th birthday.

Robbins said the only thing he discovered missing from the house was an automatic .22 caliber rifle. Sheriff Roy Barring said other weapons were in the house. BAYTOWN, Tex. (AP) Vernon Stanley Olney, 35, of Baytown, has been charged with telephone harassment of a possible state witness in a case Involving the slaying of a Baytown couple last July. Olney was charged Wednesday in connection with a telephone call to Norman Lee Brown, 34, operator of a lounge.

Investigators said Mrs. Brown phoned police and said Olney threatened her with bodily harm. Mrs. Brown is a possible witness in the case of Paul and Mary Cantrell, found slain last July. The Cantrells' daughter, Paula Derese, 26, and Vernon McManus, 33, face capital murder charges in the case.

BELLMEAD, Tex. (AP) Five persons died early today when fire swept through a mobile home in the Waco suburb of Bellmead, according to the McLennan County Sheriff's office. A spokesman said the fire took place in a mobile home park at Bellmead. The names of the victims were not immediately released by authorities. Firemen were unable to immediately determine the cause of the fire.
