Director: William Tannen Producer: Skip Short Screenplay: Dennis Shryack Michael Butler Based on book by: George La Fountaine Photography: Peter Moss 1 ATTRACTS (Vulgar language nudity violence) Tristar Pictures SAMURAI' By LAURIE HORN Herald Arts Writer The good guys still wear white hats in Flashpoint director William Tannen's new 20th Century western set on the Texas border Unfortunately the bad guys wear blue raincoats And while the movie sets you up to believe you're watching an old-fashioned American western (in other words a morality play) it's confusing figuring out what the bad guys represent At first it seems the great evil is those high-tech computer sensors the government wants to bury in the ground to detect illegal immigrants The computers threaten to put free-roaming border patrol guards Kris Kristofferson and Treat Williams out of a job (or at least out of their home-on-therange lifestyle) Kristofferson's Bob Logan and Williams' Ernie Wiatt form a romanticized buddy-buddy pair with a tradition in western movies Their macho latently homosexual relationship has echoes of Butch Cassidy and Sundance Pancho Villa and Cisco the Lone Ranger and Tonto Changing room ticket to ride But as they try to find out what might have happened in 1963 that would strand these clues in the Texas desert the conflict with the brass from Washington grows uglier Some deft nonverbal foreshadowing by the director clues the audience into the mystery well before the two partners get it But by the movie's end it's clear the moral conflict has skewed far away from the theme of the Death of the Old West Dennis Shryack and Michael Butler's screenplay suddenly turns its attention to another great American myth one that is more modern and has tarnished a lot faster To say what it is would give away the ending Suffice it to note that the movie leaves you feeling vaguely unsatisfied as though the teller had switched the story of his fireside yarn before the Showdown at the OK Corral Kristofferson and Williams are saddled with the acting burden (Kurtwood Smith in a small part is a convincing guy you love to hate as the Washington bigwig) Williams's face and body don't show all the conflict his lines suggest and Kristofferson tends to rest on his wise old grizzly-beard laurels although he's convincing when in tears You can discover sunken treasure "lore an Rahn Villa see Picasso Warhol and meet men from Mars The bad guys from Washington drive city cars instead of off-theroad vehicles What's more they don't make much of Logan and Wiatt's values They deliberately blow a drug bust and let a bunch of illegal aliens slip away job depends on those wetbacks" says the top man from Washington "If we didn't have 'em We'd invent Just as you're beginning to think the dramatic conflict in the movie is about the threat to Logan and Wiatt's relationship and to their Pat Garrett values something sinister throws the movie's entire moral tension out of whack
