Heecuor aud members of the family. The formal reports of the secretary treasurer, the grounds committee, and oilier officers showed the club to be in a most flourishing condition financially. After spending some 000 on improvement on the grounds Inst season there is still a handsome balance in the treasury. As a matter of fact wc have not made anything like a serious attempt to relieve the shortage of labor, and until we have tried other plans and found them unsuccessful, it seems ab purd to talk of adopting a plan, which has so many objectionable features as the admission of Oriental labor. AVe hardly think that people who advocate such a step have taken the trouble to thing out what it would imply. It is said that the railway companies want over men as soon as they can get them.

They could get them in China if the law permitted. But do the people of Canada want such an army of Orientals iu the The peoph of the I'nited States some years ago prohibited Chinese immigration, but no untie Tnan believes that the prosperity of the country was checked for a single moment thereby. Indeed we think ii will be admitted that the immeuse development, which has taken place in that country since the passage of the.Chitiesi excluscion act, would not have been pos sible, if Chinese had been permitted to come in freely and occupy all the opportunities1 of getting employment at ur skilled labor. The great strength of tin economic development in the I'liinc States has consisted in the fact that i has been developed by white people, very large number of whom, when came to the country, were obliged take any sort of employment available and from this as a foundation have bee able to improve their circumstances What our neighhorrs have done, we it Canada can surely do. He must have procured a large piece of soft and dry dead wood and hollowed a spot for the lower end of the stick; then putting this under a slanting rock, he must have wedged another block of sort wood above the stick. Having fixed them solidly in place by piling stones round them, he would then take a turn of his bow string around the stick and draw it back and forth rapidly, securing a blaze in a short time. With what a triumph he must have viewed his work when the first jet of flame burst from the smoking, charred mass that he had coaxed ino fiery existence. It is easy to picture him calling his family or followers about him to sec bis first machine, perhaps half consumed in the fire It had made, and explaining its operation with enthusiasm.

PROVINCIAL PRESS Then there is what may be called the economic side of the question, by which thnt nhase of it which looks further than the supplying of a temporary demand. If workingmen ore to be brought into the country, and without them our grest resources must lie dor mant. it is desirable, if T'Ostlc. tlmt they should be people, who will not only I remain here, but will, in time at least, become assimilated with the rest of the population. DANK ON WHEELS IS VERY LATEST FAD Day and Night Bank of New Ycrk Has Automobile Mesengers A ni 'lit bank and a bank on wheel is the latest convenience of which New Vorkers may take advantage in their financial transactions.

A telephone call brings at once to your door an automobile containing a safe and a clerk, take your deposit, or to bring you cash to be exchanged for your cheek. For every practical p.irpose, this automobile is a part of the bank, and furthermore, it at the call of the bank's patrons at almost any hour of day or evenimr Since the opening of the night ami day lank in New York city, on May 1. these unusual transactions are of daily Miirence. And the bank is not a freak or a fad, for among its directors are several of the foremost financiers Nov; York, and its offices are in one tiie most luxurious of the Fifth aven.n buildingi. Its deposits for the liist si uionil.s were approximately i in seven hundred accounts.

The Night and Day bank is om twenty four hours of every business day. and is closed only from midnight to midnight of Sundays and lea! holidays Three complete sets of hank offieirs nie' ees work ill three sliifts eve day, and fully 00 per cent of the b.ini,' deposits are made oulside of the ordinal banking hours. The idea of such a bank originated the necessities of mercantile houses at especially ill the peculiar of ordinary hanking to theater ii i agers and restaur! lit keepers. A re merchant's best business hours are i the afternoon, ami it has always i noiihiesome to nial.e up a deposit lie or two o'clock and to pnt it in tie bank. Then, too, the bulk of the ens' receipts of the day have to be kept ovei night in the merchant's safe, nt the risk lo j'u or burglary.

Doubtless the production of fire by spraks from the flint was followed by the discovery that friction would produce a flame, says Charles II. Cochrane in the February Circle magazine. In regions where suitable stone was not easily found, the inventive nborigine, devised the whirling stick or fire drill. This was a stick of hard wood with its lower end set in a hole in a block of very soft, dry wood. This stick was held upright between the hands, and whirled by rubbings palms first one way and then the other.

A moderate downward pressure was exerted and as the hands worked down on the stick, they were occasionally shifted to a higher hold. An improvement upon the hand whirled drill was the application of a bow for rotating it. The first man to make a bow drill is entitled to fame as the first Inventor of a machine, for he combined several working pieces in one apparatus for accomplishing desired end. This father of inventors must have conceived the Idea that if he should make a tnrn of his bow string around a stick and fix the two ends of the stick in holes, that he could rotate the stick Biuch more easily and rapidly than was possible with the hands, producing great friction and beat much quicker and with much less exertion. We can imagine we see him, a great, brawny, hairy man, with a bit of a goat skin for clothes, sitting cross legged at the mouth of.

The merchant's strong Ikix is put inlo the safe by means of a device similar to that of the ordinary letter box, by which a thing may be dropped in but cannot he taken out. Still to insure the safely of the safe, the messenger and the safe are eparated from the chauffeur by a wire agc, which is locked by an a itomatle pring lock from (he inside. Furthermore, the automobile cannot be started from the chauffeur's seat until the mes etiger inside the sage presses a secret pring that is essential to start the Mechanism.

This device prevents the ossibililv of kidaaiipiug the automobile by ro: hers.
