Mary's slates Vesper services To observe the Fifth All Souls Day Saturday, St. Mary's Byzantine Catholic Church, Freeland, will celebrate Vespers tonight at 7 p.m. Reading of the names of deceased family members and friends will take place at this service. A Divine Liturgy remembering all the departed will be celebrated at 9 a.m. Saturday.

Celebrating the Feast of Pentecost will begin with the vigil liturgy at 4 p.m. Saturday. The Divine Liturgies of Pentecost for Sunday will be at 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. The Rev.

James Demko, pastor, recalling that since green, the color for Pentecost for Byzantine Catholics, is a color for new life in nature. It symbolizes the new life of the Holy Spirit. Parishioners are encouraged to wear something green for this feast day. On Pentecost Monday, the Feast of the Holy Trinity will be celebrated with Divine Liturgy at 9 a.m., followed by a procession to the four corners of the church to symbolize the preaching of the gospel to the four comers of the world. Branz Graduates at Lock Haven Jacqueline J. Branz, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Branz, 901 Centre Freeland, was graduated from Lock Haven University on May 19. She was awarded a bachelor of science degree in social work.

A dean's list student, she received an award for outstanding academic achievement and also was presented with an award for outstanding service as a residential assistant at banquets held this month. She was secretary of the university's Social Work Club, member of the Penna. Association of Undergraduate Social Worker Education and National Association of Social Workers. While at school, she did volunteer work at Sus-que-View Nursing Home and Lock Haven Day Care, and also worked with teen pregnancy programs at Keystone Central School District, Lock Haven. During her junior and senior years, she was a member of the university staff as a resident assistant.

In her final year, she was promoted to the leadership position of head resident assistant. She also was very active in intramural sports. She completed her internship at the Williamsport Area School District, Office of Stutdent Services, as a social worker. She has been accepted into graduate school at the University of Pittsburgh. Fire chief gives report The Freeland Fire Department responded to 26 incident calls in May and 14 in April, according to the monthly report of Fire Chief Michael Kempchinsky.

There were six training sessions in April which accumulated a total of 199 man-hours; 19.5 hours of building maintenance; and 87 hours of vehicle maintenance. Kempchinsky attended an EPA workshop on emergency responders responsibilities at a hazardous materials incident. He and firefighter Paul Lesser have been requested to speak across the state concerning the Penna. House of Representatives Resolution 239, which directs local governments to investigate and recommend ways to attract and retain volunteer fire, rescue and ambulance personnel, and to foster a greater cooperation between business and emergency service providers.
