CHARLOTTE OBSERVER www.charlotte.com OBITUARY NOTICES WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 16, 2002 78 Mecklenburg Kathryn Wicker Largen, 84, of Charlotte, died October 15, 2002 at Presbyterian Hospital following a long hospital stay. She was born on October 11, 1918 in Warrenton, GA, the daughter of the late Roy Cason Wicker and Cornelia Williamson Wicker. Mrs. Largen was a loving mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, and was a faithful long time member of Myers Park United Methodist Church. She was also an avid bridge player.

Her survivors include her son, Jim Largen and wife, Mary Ann, of Charlotte, and their children, Ed and Jimmy, of Charlotte; a daughter, Lee Largen Gale and her husband, Russell, of Franklin, NC, and their children Meredith Gale-Johnson, and Rusdales sell, daughter-in-law Elaine Largen and her children, Salem Suber and Katie Largen Miller; three great grandchildren; a sister, Sarah Wicker Ware of Orange Park, FL; and a brother, Dr. Roy Cason Wicker, Jr. of Quitman, GA. A memorial service will be held 11 AM Saturday, October 19, 2002 at Myers Park United Methodist Church.

Services by the graveside will be held 10 AM that morning at Evergreen Cemetery. Friends will be received from 7 until 8:30 PM Friday evening at Harry and Bryant Company, 'Chapel in the 500 Providence Road, Charlotte. Largen. 20 Mrs. Neva Eaker Smith, 94, of Charlotte, died Tuesday, October 15, 2002 at the Brian Center. Arrangements are incomplete and in the care of the Wilson Chapel of Hankins and Whittington Funeral Service. Mr.

Benjamin Augustus Walters, 85, of Matthews, NC, died October 14, 2002 at the Presbyte- rian Hospital in Charlotte. Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Thursday in the sanctuary of the First Baptist Church of Matthews with the Reverend John Butler and the Reverend David Bai- les officiating. Burial will follow in Matthews Historic Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service. Mr.

Walters was born June 7, 1917 in Waxhaw, NC, son of the late James Spurgeon Walters and Loula Godfrey Walters. After graduating from Matthews High School, he was employed by the Life Insurance Company of Virginia for a number of years before serving three years in the U.S. Navy during World War Il. He returned to the insurance company after his tour of duty was over for a period of time before being employed by Heritage Federal Savings and Loan Association as Matthews Branch Manager. Later he was promoted to assistant Vice President Loan Officer in their Monroe office before retiring in 1980.

During his life, he was very active in the community of Matthews, serving six years on the Board of Commissioners prior to being Mayor from 1963-1969. A life long member, since 1927, of First Baptist Church of Matthews, he was faithful and active serving as Chairman of the Deacon Board, served on the Pulpit Committee, Director of Adult Sunday School, teacher for the William Bryant Carr Sunday School Class and a member of the Happy Times Club as long as his health permitted. Mr. is survived by his sister, Helen Walters Mills of Charlotte; sister-in-law, Juanita H. Jordan of Matthews; and the following nieces and nephews: Donna Reeves and Susan Wilson, both of Charlotte, Margaret Rice of Weddington, Carol Troy of Charlotte, Jean Stewart of Mt.

Pleasant, SC, Franklin Beaty of Apopka, FL, David Beaty and Ray Beaty, both of Chester, SC, Jim Walters of Gainesville, GA, Charles Walters of Grier, SC, Buck Walters Kiawah Island, SC and Dick Jordan of Matthews. Mr. Walters was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Mrs. Estelle 'Butch' Walters; brother, Daniel P. Walters; sister, Eva Dell Walters Beaty; and nephew, Joe I.

Walters. The family would like to express their appreciation to Dr. Edward Bradford and Dr. Thomas Phillips and their nurses along with Ben's many friends, for their and support his lengthy illness. We would also like to thank his caregiver, Siham Adams, for her loyalty and caring which allowed him to spend the last days at home.

Mrs. Shaw was born July 10, 1936 in Charlotte, NC, daughter of the late Robert and Gussie Huddieston Newell. She was a coowner of Max Shaw Grading, Inc.

for 50 years. Betty was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend. was born August 24, 1931 in Charlotte, NC, son of the late Lloyd Hastings and Annie Mae Cooper Warren. member of Spencer "Memorial United Methodist Church. Bill retired in 1992 after 35 distinguished years of service with the Rohm and Haas Chemical Co. He was an avid outdoorsman and especially enjoyed hunting with his family and friends. Elizabeth 'Betty' Gubbins Wittman, of Charlotte died October 13, 2002 at home. She has gone to be with her savior, the Lord Jesus Christ. She was born on June 3, 1930 in Utica, New York, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. James W.

Gubbins. She has called Charlotte home for the last 35 years. A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM Friday October 18, 2002 from the sanctuary of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, Park Road at Old Reid Road with Father Richard Hanson, celebrant. There will be a reception after the service with burial to follow at Sharon Memorial Park.

Mrs. Wittman is survived by her husband of 51 years, James man; two beloved sons, Brian Wittman and his wife Andrea of Michigan, and Kevin Wittman and his wife Tracy of Charlotte; two grandsons, Jason and Matthew Wittman of Charlotte; one granddaughter, Samantha Wittman of Tryon, NC; one sister Eileen Merritt and her husband George of Charlotte. Many nieces, nephews and cousins also survive Mrs. Wittman. A rosary service will be held from PM Thursday evening with a visitation to follow from 8-9 PM, at Heritage Funeral Home, 4431 Old Monroe Road.

BELMONT Mr.

Theodore 'Ted' Drury Stowe, 88, of Belmont, died on Tuesday, October 15, 2002 at his home after a lengthy illness. Mr. Stowe was born on December 20, 1913 in Gastonia, the eldest son of the late Hardaway and Susan Stowe, and brother of the William Stowe. I late Margaret and He was educated in the Gaston County public schools and Kings Business College, Charlotte. During World War II he served in the 620th Quarter Master Depot Company serving the 20th Air Force, where he achieved the rank of First Lieutenant.

At the time of his retirement in 1983, Mr. Stowe was director of Quality Control for R. L. Stowe Mills where he had been employed for 40 years. Before the decline of his health, Mr.

Stowe was an active member of First Presbyterian Church of Belmont where he served eight terms as a deacon and in 1991 was made Deacon Emeritus. Stowe had also served as treasurer of both Sunday School and the church. He was particularly interested in the music of the church. He served on committees involved in rebuilding the chancel organ, and choosing an instrument the chapel, selecting handbells and William James Pharr Carillon. For many years he was in charge of running the sound system.

Mr. Stowe is survived by his wife of 42 years, Nell Morgan Stowe of Belmont; a son, Theodore Drury Stowe, Jr. and his wife, Karen; grandchildren, Nathan and Virginia Stowe, all of Newport News, VA; sister, Betty Sloan Stowe of Gastonia; brother, Hardaway Pegram Stowe, Jr. of Mt. Olive, NC; two nieces; and a nephew.

A celebration of life service will be held 11 AM Thursday, October 17, 2002 at First Presbyterian Church, Belmont, with Dr. Richard Boyce and Reverend Wilson Rhoton officiating. Interment will follow the service in Greenwood Cemetery, Belmont. The family will receive friends tonight from 7:30 to 9:00 PM in the church parlor. McLean Funeral Directors of Belmont is serving the family of Mr. Stowe. An BOONE Mr. James Andrew 'Jim' Brakefield, age 83, of Louisville, KY, a former resident of Boone, died Monday, October 14, 2002 at Baptist Home East in Louisville. He was born October 23, 1918 in Quinton, AL, to the late Jack and Annie Sanes Brakefield.

He graduated from Centre College in Kentucky in 1941 with a B.A. degree in Math and received a Master's degree in Physical Education from the College of William and Mary in 1950, where he served as a graduate assistant. Mr. Brakefield retired from the U.S. Navy as a Lieutenant, having served in World War I1 as a torpedo pilot, successfully completing 49 combat missions.

He was awarded two Distinguished Flying Crosses and two Air Medals. He was an assistant coach years at Emory and Henry College and Wofford College before becoming head coach at Wofford in 1967, where his 1969 and 1970 teams compiled a 20-game winning streak. Coach Brakefield came to Appalachian State University in 1971 and was head coach until 1979, leading Appalachian into a Southern Conference schedule. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame at Emory and Henry College, Wofford College and Appalachian State University. He was a member of Boone United Methodist Church.

Survivors include one daughter, Brenda Ammon and her husband, Barry; one granddaughter, Lisa Smith and her husband, Larry; one great grandson, Kyle Andrew Smith, all of Louisville, KY; one sister, Mrs. Dot Jody of Ervin, TN; two brothers, Walter Brakefield of Atlanta, GA and A. J. Brakefield of Tarpon Springs, FL; and a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Eloise Wallace Brakefield.

Funeral services will be co. ducted Thursday morning at 11.0€ AM at Boone United Methodist Church, with Dr. F. Ronald Smith and Reverend Marianne Romana officiating. Entombment will follow in Mount Lawn Cemetery Mausoleum in Boone.

Margaret was born in Davidson County on July 16, 1921 to James Henry Thomason and Maggie Spaugh Thomason. She worked for Costner's Jewelry for over 45 years and was a member of First Baptist Church and sang in the choir. Her sister, Anne Thomason Beachum, preceded her in death.

Surviving are her brother, James Spaugh Thomason of Concord; sister, Minnie Kathleen Thomason Ward of Lexington; nephews, Richard Thomason of Concord and Jim Beachum of Washington; and a niece, Susan Beachum of Connecticut. Rebecca Herring Glover, 79, of 3955 N. Walnut Street, died Tuesday, October 15, 2002 at her residence. Mrs. Glover was born in Sampson County, NC on November 25, 1923 and was the daughter of the late George D. and Louise Carroll Herring.

She was an active member of First Baptist Church, Lumberton, where she taught Sunday school for many years, a charter member and past president of the Gardenettes and the Flower Show Judges' Club, Nationally Accredited Master Flower Show Judge, Nationally Accredited Landscape Design Judge, a Master Gardner, and a member of the Readers Guild book club. Mrs. Glover graduated from UNC-G and completed graduate studies at UT. She taught in the public schools in Washington, NC, Lumberton, NC and Robeson County, NC. She also taught at Southeastern Regional Medical Center School of Nursing.

Survivors include her husband, Edward J. Glover, Jr. of the home; two daughters, Evelyn Glover Brown and her husband, Martin, of Myrtle Beach, SC, and Elizabeth Davis Glover of Cary, NC; a sister, Rachel Herring Bowen and her husband, David, of Wilmington, NC; three grandchildren, Stewart, Rebekah and Coleman Brown, all of Myrtle Beach, SC; and several nieces and id nephews. Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Thursday, October 17, 2002 at First Baptist Church, 7th and Walnut Street, Lumberton, NC with Reverend Dr. Russell T.

Survivors include her husband, Eugene (Squirrel) Aldridge of Monroe; one daughter, Cathy Fowler Parker of Monroe; five brothers, Javis (Jaybird) Caudle, Henry Dickson Caudle, both of Monroe, EuBoyce Caudle and Curtis Lee Caudle, both of Marshville, and Wilson Harvey Caudle of Charlotte. There is one grandchild, Hannah Catherine Parker of Monroe. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Joe Fletcher Caudle and Jesse Paul Caudle.
