We have been en- gag^d four tnonths and I feel like I'm married already ... But without a husband. He left tor the Service just after he gave me the ring. And he left strict orders that I couldn't go out anywhere. In all this time I haven't set foot out of the house except to go to work and I feel like I'm in jail. I don't see the harm in seeing a movie or taking a drive with my girl friends. But I can't fcven go over to their houses! I love my fiance and wouldn't be unfaithful, but don't you think this is askingtoo much, especially since we don't plan to be married for three and one-half years? He'll be away most of that time. - GIRL IN A CAGE Dear Girl: If this is a preview of marriage, don't wait around for the main featurel This boy has a lot to learn about trust before he walks down the aisle. -H Dear Helen: I am 16 and have been going out with boys several years. Most of them tell me they love me. but that scares me away and I drop them, to find someone else. All my girl friends are going steady and they are scared their boyfriends will drop them. Before even attempting to crash the acting scene- "Thqt Girl" Mario Thomas got her state leaching credential from University of Southern California. If you doubt me, look who's happy and who Isn't. Keep on being friends with many boys, but don't push yourself Into a big romance before you're ready. You don't need to prove anything— except that you're smart enough to wait. — H Dear Helen: A while ago when I read that letter from the girl who complained about her boyfriend's kisses, I thought it was hilarious, but now I'm in the same situation, and ft ain't fun- nyl My fella Is nice, cute, Intelligent, respectful, everything except he kisses like a St. Bernard. I can't think of a nice way to tell him a girl likes a firm, strong kiss. - KATY Dear K: Tell him Just that: a girl likes firm, strong; masculine kisses. If boys only knew how many girls felt likewise, they'd learn to button up their lips.-H THff NATIONAL IMPORT ON WHAT'S HAPPENING NEW HOPE FOR EDUCATION: Teens and teachers who are sick and tired of school as it now exists can hope for a better future according to Leland B, Newcomer, president- elect of La Verne College in La Verne, Calif. Data processing and computers will make the major miracle possible. By turning schools into computers and students into numbered robots? No! Computers will merely determine what a student knows and doesn't know and will help plan instruction specifically for each individual. Students will spend more time in individual study and less hearing endless repetitions of what they already know. Teachers will specialize in lecturing or one-to-one counseling depending on what each does best—his status and pay will increase tremendously, too. Basically, students will have much more independence and less "overseeing" and "babysitting" from bored and boring teachers. Even the "prisonlike" look of many schools will change, thanks to such things as glass sliding walls and the huge instructional material and resource center that will take up to 50 per cent of new schools. We wonder how many years of conservative resistance will delay these much-to-be-hoped- for changes. MORE RESULTS OF "FRIGHT YOUR SENATOR" POLL: With all (he hand wringing and bleating about "what's wrong with young America" the phrase makers and blah-blah flaks of both parties ignore a chance to close the generation gap and open a new era of political responsibility. Republicans and Democrats should put "vote at 18" planks into their campaign platforms. Then go after the states to push through the necessary legislation—for November 1B68! Another sig< nifieant result: Seventy-two per cent of the respondents favored a "youth party movement" to provide politicians with more and better information on the views of young America. HEATLE FAN CLUBS UNITE: Disc jocks heading up all- out effort to deliver a write-in total on a "Beatles Back" campaign. Promise is that "audiences will be quiet and music appreciated" if the boys "will only come back" to the U.S.A. Bob Thomas at the Movies HOLLYWOOD (AP) - Questions that are being asked about this week's Academy nominations: U "Doctor DoiiUle" was considered one ol the five best pictures of the year, why wasn't U nominated for direction or per- forrnances? Was Katharine Hepburn's performance la "Guess Who'sCom- ing to Pinner" really that good, or was she nominated for sentimental reasons? Why was "Far from the Madding CroiKj" go overlooked? (it was named only for original musical score.) Has there ever been a year of less distinguished songs? (Try whistling any o| them,) Was "Thoroughly fcfcdero Millie" really good enough to win seven nominations? Why did the voters overlook the performances of "to Cold Blcwd?" And dMn't "Th* Taming of the Shrew" deserve more than nominations for art direction and costume design? Shouldn't James Joyce have been nominated for screenplay of "Ulysses," instead ol Joseph Stuck ajod FrwJ Haloes? Do th* feast-picture nomim- tiocs reflect 'pr*sU«ut Johnson's pl«% agajost traveling abroad? (All five were filmed In the United States, although part of "Doctor DolltUe" was shot overseas). And are the Academy voter* being chauvinistic about r*. warding American actors? (Only three of this year's 80 nominees wort- foreign-born va. more than half last year,) Or are the voters simply look* ing for newcomers? (who ever heard of Dustin Hoffman, Gene Hack man, George Kennedy, Michael J. Pollard, Esteile Parsons, Bean Richards or Katba- rine Hoes before this year?) Aren't the awards much «in> pier and more logical now that designations of black-and-white and color have been eliminated in photography, costume design, etc.? Wouldn't they be even better witn one writing award Instead of two? And toe same for $eor* ing? Why wasn't Sidney Poitier nominated? Permantntf
