TMadio 12A oo jjjamj Herald Wednesday June 2 1982 Changing anchors mean a change Sandra Earley Television An example occurred Monday in a 6 pm story about a chili cooking contest Fitz introduced and closed the story Dan Tasciotti reported it Tasciotti said in the piece that he had to leave before a winner was chosen But neither he nor Fitz updated the story Even if there a winner at airtime Fitz should have told us so Fitz comes to the new job with solid experience and a pleasant on-camera manner Only time will show if perception understanding and steadiness go with it hot competition for the story and both stations sent reporters and crews to Mexico As the story unfolded Ch 10 news director Steve Wasserman charged Ch 4 with when it appeared that Ch 4 had paid for the tickets A Ch 4 representative claimed humanitariamsm the couple had limited financial resources and aggressive reporting Ch 4 also said it expected Eastern to pay for the tickets but the airline would not confirm that at the time Sally Fitz replaced Donna Hanover Monday on WCKT-Ch 6 pm and 11 pm newscasts The new anchor made no gaffes as she shared duties with Steve Rondina-ro Nor were there any triumphs She was excessively pert and flirtatious introducing a feature on shooting marbles but that's a small point halk it up to opening-night eagerness Htz is 29 and has short dark hair Hanover is 32 and blond And about all there is to say about the changeover in female anchors at Ch 7 1 itz was a Ch 7 reporter and weekend anchor before taking over the spotlight position Hanover left the job she held for nearly two years to marry a Justice Department official in Washington I he brit evaluations and comparisons are not to belittle either of the anchorwomen They simply indicate the nature of local television news Ch 7 made its important decision about anchors several years ago It chose a youthful image with fresh smooth-faced anchors rather than who can demonstrate much beyond congeniality early on Stations often make much of their hard-news experience Htz has a journalism degree from the University of Missouri and began her career at St KMOX radio long known for outstanding reporting While there she won a prestigious Robert Kennedy Award for a series of stones on rural health care Anchors can show hard-newi training in times of crisis extended broadcasts for a hurricane for example or in live on-set interviews The latter however are often too short for more than obvious questions But on an average day such experience evident and many local anchors can get bv without it for years Even when they have reporting skills anchors sometimes forget to employ them Their scripts are often written by a reporter or a producer not the anchor And although the anchor reads them changes words and can ask questions details slip by Ch Sally Fitz Entertainment channel debuts the mature look of the seasoned older personalities at WTVJ-Ch 4 and WPLG-Ch 10 Third in local news ratings Ch 7 at least offers viewers an alternative In August Ch 10 will offer a similar choice when it brings in a 29-year-old Mike Schneider to replace Glenn Rinker and anchor with Ann Bishop Young anchors are nearly interchangeable parts particularly when they start jobs Their assignment is a simple one: Read scripts clearly and with warmth and speak pleasantly to the sports and weather guys It is the rare young anchor WTVJ-Ch 4 news director Ralph Renick said Tuesday that his station will pay Eastern Airlines for the round-trip tickets to Mexico City used by Patricia and Robert Koby-Iarski The Big Coppitt Key couple was the subject of a news story in April when Patricia kidnaped son Josh Sultzbaugh was found in Mexico The return pitted Ch 4 and WPLG-Ch 10 in old programs from the BBC Under the 10-year agreement the BBC gives the Entertainment Channel first claim and two exclusivity to its programs After that they may be shown on public or commercial TV Among the first BBC offerings on the new channel: a six-part adaptation of Charles research enforced by the Gallups indicates that about half of the television audience is totally unhappy with what they're Taylor says have a real potential within that group" From Herald ire Sen ices When he was president of CBS Inc from 1972 through 1976 Arthur Taylor was one of the noisiest campaigners against that sinister evil known as pay TV Today Taylor is chairman of the nation's newest and most ambitious pay-TV network Taylor calls the Entertainment Channel a joint venture of Rockefeller Center Inc and RCA premium network for those people who have outgrown ordinary The Entertainment start-up day is Friday when 800000 subscribers to various cable systems will have a chance to sample the new service Taylor says nearly $100 million has been invested in the new service which will offer viewers a mix of Broadway shows foreign films original productions and new and Best Bets Morning Highlights SATlSiSATS
