Born, in Eureka, September 1st, to Mr. and Mrs. Robert J. Brown, a son. The steamer City of Topeka sails from Eureka for San Francisco today at 12 oclock noon.

Coroner H. A. Hansen of Fortuna was a business visitor to Ferndale last Thursday evening. Otto Davis, son of Mr. and Mrs.

G. S. Davis, arrived Wednesday from Coquille, Oregon, to visit relatives hete. A. J.

Monroe and Geo. TRolley, both of Eureka, are candidates for the secretaryship of the Republican county central committee. Reuben Reed, son of Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Reed of Rohnerville, died in a Eureka hospital last Thursday after a weeks illness with appendicitis.

It is reported that the Hammond Lumber Co. is to purchase the mill and holdings of the Metropolitan Co. at Metropolitan. It is said the Metropolitan property is valued at more than a million dollars. President W.

S. Palmer of the Northestern Pacific railroad, accompanied by a party of gentlemep. was a visitor to Humboldt several days the latter part of the week, inspecting the companys holdings. Mary A. Lawler, as administrator of the estate of John Lawler, deceased, has commenced suit against the Bayside Lumber Company for $25,000 damages for injuries received by John Lawler on October 14, 1913, near Bayside which resulted in his death two days later.

Lawler was. struck by a rock which fell from a flat car at a train owned by the Bayside Co. passed him. Charles Wellock, formerly of this county but more recently a real estate operator in Ukiah, walked into the detective bureau at San Francisgo Tuesday and asked to be examined as to his sanity, according to the Chronicle. He was ordered sent to the Detention hospital.

W. L. Pedrick and Bon Ray of Ferndale, who departed August 18th for an extended eastern trip, arrived at Mctomb, Illinois, on the 24th, according to a letter home. They report everything very hot and dry in the east. The attention of our readers is called to the new advertisement cf the Sharpies Milking Machine, which will be found in todays Enterprise.

The Sharpies Co. have one of their machines on display at the fair this week. A business change' is under consideration in Ferndale. The details have not been settled as yet, hut it is stated that the deal will probably go through and the change take place either the 15th of this month or tne first of October. Dr.

and Mrs. A. M. Dinsmore of Ferndale expect to leave in their automobile this afternoon or tomorrow for Hayfork, Trinity county, where they will visit at the Williams home a few days. Mr.

and Mrs. L. H. Miner, Mrs. Dinsmores parents, went to Hayfork a couple of weeks ago.

Messrs. F. G. Williams of Ferndale and Ira Russ of Eureka returned Thursday evening from a months outing on South Fork mountain. Mr.

Williams departed Friday morning to join his wife, his mother and Mrs. Z. Russ, who departed overland Thursday for San Francisco. The party remained at Rogers Resort over night, their machine coming back to meet Mr. Williams, 'who was driven out by E.

Morris Rasmussen, proprietor of the Loleta Market was transacting business and meeting friends in Ferndale last Friday. A. L. Trousdale of Ferndale departed Saturday to visit his daughter in San Francisco. He expect to be away about two weeks.

Frit Anthony, now the rage in Eureka, will play in the orchestra as well as give a violin solo Thursday night of this week. adv. The Village Club of Ferndale will meet on Monday evening, September 21st, at the home of Miss Agnes Smith in North Fern-dale. M. P.

Benjamin assisted by Walter Cook and Hugh Hamilton has completed a breakwater 170 feet long for B. H. Wolf on the old Morgan place on the Island. Mr. and Mrs.

Cal Rumrill moved last week to the house in North Ferndale recently vacated by Joseph Russ and family, who are now residing in their bungalow on Fifth stieet. Mrs. Lena Teichgraber, widow and executrix of Frank L. Teichgraber, has petitioned for the probate of his wii executed March 7, 1914, which disposes of property of the value of about $7000. The heirs are the widow and her 10 children.

A. W. Blackburn of Ferndale is the attorney. A large number of young people were entertained Tuesday evening at the C. B.

Sweet home in the Port Kenyon section. The affair was planned by the Methodist young folks and was in the nature of a farewell for the Misses Janet and Iola Sweet who will depart soon en route to San Jose to resume their studies at the State Normal. The steamer Kilburn is scheduled to arrive at Eureka tomorrow and sail fur San Francisco Thursday at 12 o'clock noon. The Fortuna stores will close tomorrow to permit the proprietors and employes to attend the Humboldt County Fair in Ferndale. The Eureka Native Sons will observe tomorrow, Admission Day, with a musical program and dance at New Era Park in the evening. All the Native Sens in the county have been invited. The residence of A. O. Dale in the Loleta section was totally de-strojed Tuesday by fire originating from a defective flue. A new residence will soon he erected on the Brown place at Centerville to replace the one destroy by fire some time ago. Lumber 'o the new house is now being hauled.

John Gaarden of Fortuna, late candidate for County Recorder, will leave within a few months for the Argentine Republic, where he plans to enter the export and import business. Jack Bowers, formerly of Fortuna but now of Williams, Colusa county, was a business visitor to Ferndale several days last week. He came up to purchase some Jersey stock from Gilbert Trigg. The nineteenth annual convention of the Womens Christain Temperance Union of Humboldt County will be held in the Methodist church in Areata on Thursday, Sept. 10th, and Friday morning, Sept.

11th. The city of Eureka has taken over the Eureka Water Companys holdings, for the purchase of which bonds in the sum of, $270,000 were voted recently. Oscar Lord, superintendent of the old company, will be employed by the city as manager. In several speeches which he has recently made in ihe central part of the state, Governor Johnson has made it plain that the universal eight-hour law which is to be voted on November is no part of the Progressive program, but that it is an initiative Socialist measure which was defeated in the legislature of 1913. All candidates at the recent primary election must have their statements of expense filed with the county cltrk not later than today. The report of the finance committee shows that the late Chautauqua in Lurkea broke a little better than even, the association having a balance in the bank of $46.83. Grandma Gates, an aged Indian woman residing between Fernbridge and Fortuna, died last week and was buried in the Table Bluff cemetery. She was over 90 years old. A.

T. S. Hadley of Upper Mattole was in Ferndale yesterday en route hon from a couple of weeks business visit in San Francisco. He-will leave for the Mattole this morning. Fred Saunders, who accompanied him to San Francisco, is expected home in a day or two.

C. T. Schreiner returned to his Ferndale home Sunday morning from a business visit to Orick, in the northern part of the county. He left Friday with the Pcugh Bros, of Elk River, expecting to return the same day, but an accident to the Peugh automobie necessitated the delay and also a walk of several miles. St.

Marys Sunday school of Ferndale spent last Saturcay in the beautiful redwoods at Rohner Park, Fortuna. Rev. Mr. Bell expresses his appreciation to he business men the town and to the ladies who donated their autos and services to convey the merry party of seventy children and members of the congregation who enjoyed the picnic the fresh air and glorious sunshine. Friday, September 11, will he Home Visitation Day in Eureka.

On thit day, hundreds if ehirch workers of all denominations will visit every home in the city between 1 and 3 oclock in the afternoon. and secure a record of the church or Sunday school connection, or denominational preference of every individual of every family.
