Saturday May 10 2003 The Sacramento Bee BS Sylva: He also does the occasional wedding This will be my signature piece To have a chance to express myself in Capitol Park These trellises will be seen by tens of thousands of people 55 Larry Meeks CONTINUED FROM B1 seen by tens of thousands of people There will be pictures and weddings done there It makes me feel like made a The hardy roses though forged in a pit of brimstone have been tempered in a basin of faith Meeks is 59 years old He is a big man with big hands and a gleaming bald head His voice textured and rhapsodic is well-suited to the pulpit He was born in Bakersfield where his father the Rev Reuben Meeks first worked as an itinerant preacher roaming the fields this loudspeaker lashed to the top of his automobile his sermons crackly and faint Meeks served in Vietnam He was educated at UC Davis where while still attend ing school he worked as a maintenance man in the dormitories For 25 years he served as a state executive retired now and spends all his time in consult with steel He lives in a sprawling home he built himself on the Sacramento River which is now chocolate and swollen He has been married 37 years to Dennie Meeks whose father the Rev Dennie Williams founded Williams Memorial Church of God in Christ in 1924 at Eighth and Today the church is at 4495 Martin Luther King Blvd Meeks is an associate pastor there supervises Sunday school and occasionally does weddings His real sanctuary is his garage Here amidst the clangor of raw steel iron anvils gas forges rows of hammers and an array of grinders Meeks pounds out a fluid realm of nature water tules fish birds tree limbs and branches all organic even feathery And now these trio of arbors which Meeks believes are coated with a benevolent spiritual patina I was building these trellises" he says prayed to God that He would bless them And I prayed that God would bless the people who stand beneath them and keep their marriage intact May they live in love their children receive the grace of The Bee's Bob Sylva can be reached at (916)321-1135 or bsylvasacbeecom Sacramento BeeOwen Brewer FUNERAL NOTICESVITAL STATISTICS For
