Swartout, whose Los Angeles county health department resignation becomes effective July 1 and who wall open an office for general practice at 412 North Broadway on that date, I yesterday afternoon was present- I ed with a physicians-type watch by a committee representing the personnel of the southern county office. Presenting the watch and plaque in token of their esteem of the doctors work were Dr. Wayne R. Ingalls, Dr.

B. G. Grib-ble, both of the health office, and Mrs. Gladys Purviance, secretary to Dr. Jonathan Kirkpatrick, health officer.

Dr. Svartout is a graduate of the University of Michigan, the School of Medical Evangelists in Los Angeles and Yale University School of Public Health. During the past three and a half years he has served as health officer for Los Angeles county. The plaque, inscribed with the names of the health associates, paid tribute to Dr. Swartouts understanding, guidance, loyalty and undeviating adherence to the principles of public health.

Dr. Bertram Low-Beer, associate professor of radiology, informed the North American Radium Society that the radioactive phosphorus treatment was as good as any known, but declined to say that it was better than X-rays, radium or surgery. He emphasized that the treatment was applicable only to superficial skin cancers and warts.

He warned against any hope that it can be applied in the near future to deep-seated tumors. Low-Beer revealed that 301 cases of superficial skin cancer a-id warts have been treated, without publicity, in quiet medical research here since 1941. Air College Adds 'Commando' To War Plane Line To its growing fleet of airplanes of all models The University of Southern California, College cf Aeronautics, today added a famed Curtiss Commando, known militarily ac a C-45 cargo ticrsfort, workhorse of the Air Tranrpoit Command during the war. With a wing span of 108 feet and length of 76 feet, the Commando was a flying box car and carried 10-ton cargoes of men, weapons and supplies all theaters of war.

It was also the vehicle most used for paratroopers and the transportation of personnel. The Commando now stationed at Hancock Field was used the African and Indian sci vice but since its retirement from service its twin 2,000 horse-power engines have been completely overhauled.
