(UPI)-The Mississippi House of Representatives passed a bill Wednesday that could send parents of illegitimate children to prison un less they submit to voluntary sterilization. Sponsors said the proposal was aimed at curbing welfare problems caused by an estimated 8,000 illegitimate births in the state each year. The measure, yet to be passed by the state Senate, would make it a felony for any person to become the parent of more than one child bom out of wedlock. Conviction would carry prison sentences up to five years unless the offender agreed to sterilization.
