It said helicopter passed over the weather station twice with guns firing and then landed troops to surround it.

There was no immediate report of casualties and the ministry's statement did not say how many Argentines were on the islands. The weather station normally had a crew of about 20. In London, a Defense Ministry spokesman said "we know nothing about" the Argentine report. The assault on a frigid, rocky outpost 1,400 miles southeast of the Falkland Islands appeared to be a British effort to clear the last Argentine presence from the South Atlantic islands claimed by both countries. Argentina announced the seizure of the South Sandwich Islands, along with another chain called South Georgia, on April 3, the day after Argentine troops occupied the Falklands.

Britain recaptured South Georgia on April 25, but did nothing at that time about the South Sandwich chain. SEE BACK PAGE Haig Charges: Soviets In New Missile Activities NEW YORK (AP) Secretary of State Alexander M. Haig Jr. on Saturday accused the Soviet Union of conducting "unprecedented" strategic missile activity even as Soviet Foreign Minister Andrei Gromyko was presenting arms control proposals to the United Nations. Haig made the charge at a news conference after more than nine hours of talks with Gromyko over the past two days.

In a speech to the United Nations on Tuesday, Gromyko presented a promise by Soviet President Leonid I. Brezhnev that the Soviets would never be the first to use nuclear weapons. Haig claimed that Soviet actions "are not consistent with the words that are being used." He said that only a few days after the Gromyko speech, the Soviet Union conducted exercises that included the test of an anti-satellite weapon, the launching of two intercontinental ballistic missiles, and the firings of a sea-launched ballistic missile and two anti-ballistic missiles that SEE BACK PAGE Lompico residents whose canyon community was literal- My torn apart during the killer Lstorm in January are still Ljworking to put the pieces back fjtogether again. It seems that there is an easy transfer to the child. "It is unlikely that the woman in her early 20s has been employed, so the couples fall into a more traditional division of duty." Ms. Weingarten, a member of the department of psychiatry at Boston's Children's Hospital, said the couples themselves indicated a later parenthood was more desirable. "We found that none of the couples in their 30s wished that they had their children earlier," she said. "But all of the 20-year-olds wished they had waited at least one or two years before they had their child." Ms.

Weingarten said interviews with the smaller samplings of couples in their 40s were inconclusive. "They all had Israelis Encircle W. Beirut BEIRUT, Lebanon (AP) Israeli-Palestinian mortar and rocket battles erupted along the fringes of the guerrillas' encircled west Beirut nerve center Saturday while U.S. and Lebanese negotiators tried to head off the growing possibility of an Israeli tank-led assault on the panicked enclave. As the Israelis moved their armor closer, hundreds of cars jammed a Green Line checkpoint waiting to escape west Beirut.

Tens of thousands of refugees too frightened to leave the enclave moved closer to the center of the zone, and tens of thousands of others fled south along the coastal highway. (Related stories, pages 20, 40) The Israelis brought more tank, artillery and infantry reinforcements to the edge of the 10-square-mile stronghold, but respected their promise to the United States to make no move into the Palestinian-held areas during a 48-hour truce period. The deadline expires at an unstated time Sunday afternoon. The negotiators, including U.S. presidential envoy Philip C.

Habib, Lebanese President Eli as Sarkis and former Premier Saeb Salaam, sought to persuade the Palestine Liberation Organization in the west Beirut enclave to surrender its arms to the Lebanese army to avoid bloody street battles which the outnumbered and outgunned PLO was sure to lose. The arrests culminated a three-month investigation conducted with narcotics agents from the federal Drug Enforcement Administration, San Jose Drug Enforcement Task Force and Los Angeles County Sheriffs Office, said Chief Ray Belgard. Investigators have not ruled out the possibility that the arrested men had ties to organized crime in Mexico, said Captain Terry Medina. In custody on federal drug charges are Jose Quesada Cornejo, 23, Reyes Cervantes Sanchez, 24, Rafael Cervantes Heredia, 18, and Jorge Enrique Furtado, 30. All four live in Watsonville and have been taken to San Francisco, where they will be arraigned Monday before a federal magistrate, said Medina. They will be prosecuted by the U.S.

attorney's office. The two-hour raid began at 3 p.m. when Cornejo allegedly sold five ounces of heroin, worth $45,000, to undercover narcotics agents at Crestview Shopping Center, said Medina. A search warrant then was obtained with the help of the district attorney's, office for 154 Blackburn Apt. 12.

There, police said they found 1.25 kilograms of cocaine (about three pounds), a handgun that police said belongs to Sanchez, $1,700 in cash, counterfeit immigration cards (known as green cards) and equipment to manufacture the cards. The study also looked at the phenomena Ms. Weingarten called "the fatherhood click" the point where fathers take a more active emotional interest in their children. When the "click" occurs depends on a variety of factors, including the father's own childhood, his opportunity to take more time to be with the child and whether or not there is a "good fit" between the temperament of father and child.

"We found fathers can turn on to the fatherhood experience at any time in their lives. It can happen in the delivery room or it can wait until the father becomes a grandfather," she said. In response to recent Sentinel articles, Arnold answered Friday, "The Dow Jones Sentinel says they don't know where I'm at.

I'll tell you where I'm at. I'm out after their Trilateral tails and I'm going to pin the tail on that donkey. "Gary Richard Arnold isn't playing a game. Let it be known, I'm at war against totalitarians of Wall St. and Washington.

The Dow Jones Sentinel speaks for them. It is time a candidate for Congress speaks up for the U.S. (I'm that Man)," Arnold said in a written statement. He is referring to a number of articles that noted Arnold was absent from the 16th Congressional District on election night June 8 and for the 10 days following. Arnold has since explained he was in Southern California putting together his campaign with other Republican nominees and that The Sentinel should have known that by keeping check on the international wire service.

No one at The Sentinel remembers seeing Arnold's name on the international wire. However, while he was gone, Arnold missed an invitation to meet with the local Republican Central Committee, a group that by state law has to endorse Arnold in his campaign against Incumbent Democrat Leon Panetta. That endorsement is causing a lot of headaches among local Republicans because Arnold's political convictions are not within the party's known philosophy. He's also accused the party leader, President Reagan, of being a tool of the Rockefeller-run Trilateral Commission. Arnold's reference to "Dow Jones" is prompted by the recent merger of The Sentinel into Ottaway Newspapers, which is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Dow Older Dads By FRED BAYLES WELLESLEY, Mass.

(AP) Dear Old Dad may be dearer if he's older, according to a study that found men who become fathers later in life are likely to be more involved in the care and needs of their children. "What we found is that the group of men who seemed to be most Involved in the hands-on care of the children were those who became fathers in their 30s," said Kathy Weingarten, a psychologist who conducted the study at the Wellesley College Center for Research on Women. "This was the group that did a variety of the day-in, day-out types of chores, like diapering and car-pooling, more so than fathers in their 20s," she said. Ms. Weingarten said the study was based oh interviews with 36 couples who had their first child in their early 20s, 36 couples who began raising families in their early 30s and 14 douples who had their first child in their 40s.

The couples interviewed were from-Maine to Virginia and came from urban, suburban and rural areas. Half the couples interviewed had high school educations; the other half had. college diplomas. Ms. Weingarten said she believed men in their 30s were more flexible when it came to child-rearing chores that younger husbands.

"The couples in their 30s are more likely to have developed routines of sharing from the time they are married," she said. "More wives are employed so the men are used to sharing chores like a in1ii Vi.
