Dc 10, 1979 THE SUN C-3 Griese hot as Miami wins AFC East title I game winning streak would give the team a full head of steam going into the playoffs. On the Dolphins' first possession, Griese drove Miami 72 yards in seven plays. He capped the drive by passing 25 yards to Nat Moore at the goal line, and the swift wide receiver left Detroit's Ken Fantetti and Luther Bradley sprawling as he stepped into the end zone. The next time Miami got the ball, Griese drove the club 59 yards in eight plays, concluded by a 29-yard touchdown pass play to Jimmy Cefalo, who caught the ball at the 2-yard line in front of Eddie Lewis and Jimmy Allen, and stepped in for the touchdown. While Miami was scoring twice, the Dolphins' defense allowed Detroit to run off just eight plays, two of which were punts.

Miami's Larry Csonka and Gary Davis each scored on 3-yard runs for the Dolphins in the second half. The victory left Miami at 10-5 and alone in first place ahead of the New England Patriots in the AFC East. Detroit dropped to 2-13. PONT1AC, Mich. (AP) Miami quarterback Bob Griese feels like the Dolphins are just hitting their stride and coach Don Shula gives most of the credit for that surge to Griese.

"Bob looks like he's come back," Shula said after the 34-year-old Griese guided the Dolphins to an easy 28-10 National Football League victory over the Detroit Lions Sunday. The Dolphins clinched the AFC East title Sunday night when the New England Patriots lost, 27-26, to the New York Jets. The Dolphins scored both times they had the ball in the first quarter as Griese went 6 for 6 for 101 yards and two touchdowns in the period. "Bob was sharp in the first quarter," Shula said, "and his play-calling was excellent." It was Griese's first start since Shula benched him three weeks ago in favor of Don Strock. "I can't explain why I'm playing better now," Griese said.

"I don't think it (the benching) had any psychological value for me." Griese said he felt the Dolphins' three- JiC.jt. ins''? Chargers rout Saints, 35-0 NEW ORLEANS (AP) Reserve fullback Hank Bauer said he wasn't overly impressed by scoring touchdowns on each of his first three carries for the San Diego Chargers Sunday, since he is the team's designated diver. San Diego whipped the New Orleans Saints 350 in a National Football League game. Bauer's touchdowns all came on leaps over the line from a yard out.

"I've done that before," the third year running back out of Cal Lutheran said. "I don't care if I have 180 yards or one, just as long as we win. "I had two against Oakland last year and a couple against Kansas City before, and they were all short-yardage situations." He said individual statistics are the least of his concerns. San Diego quarterback Dan Fouts, who threw for 253 yards and a touchdown, said he wasn't at all perturbed about being pulled out of the game 156 yards short of a 12-year-old NFL record. "We won, so we got the stat I wanted," Fouts said after the game.

His coach, Don Coryell, said Fouts actually played one more series than he was supposed to play. "I didn't want him to go in in the third quarter," Coryell said. "There was a misunderstanding and he went onto the field. "I wasn't concerned about what his statistics were. Statistics are not important.

"The important thing was to get him out of the game so he wouldn't get hurt." Coryell wanted to make sure he had his star quarterback healthy for next week's showdown with Denver for the championship of the AFC West. Sunday's victory clinched at least a wild-card playoff berth if the Chargers' bid for a division title should fail. New Orleans' hopes for its first-ever playoff berth were crushed when the Rams pounded Atlanta, 34-13. Fouts hit 17 of 21 passes in the first half, then threw two incompletions in the second half before sitting out the rest of the game. He needs just 156 more yards to break the NFL season record of 4,007 yards set by Joe Namath in 1967.

Fouts is 30 completions short of the record set by Fran Tarkenton last year. San Diego got all of its touchdowns in the first half. Bauer got his on three 1-yard dives his only carries of the first half. Fullback Clarence Williams, who rushed for 88 yards on 17 carries, scored on a 5-yard run, and Fouts hit wide receiver John Jefferson on a 26-yard scoring pass play. Jefferson, who had five receptions for 104 yards, suffered fractured ribs on his final catch just before halftime and did not play the rest of the way.

New Orleans could not mount a serious threat in the first half. Chuck Muncie, who last week became the first Saints' running back ever to rush for 1,000 yards in a season, was held to just three yards on two carries in the first two quarters. He finished with 32 yards on nine carries. New Orleans quarterback Archie Manning hit on 19 of 31 passes for 173 yards. Manning now has 3,007 yards passing for the season.

San Diego has to beat Denver next Monday night in order to win the AFC West. Although the Chargers are now 114 and the Broncos 10-5, a tie between the two teams would give Denver the championship by virtue of their two-game sweep over San Diego. 'Skins tame Bengals, 28-14 MOVING SALE EVERYTHING IN STORE REDUCED Limited To Stock On Hand giving him the ball late in the game, when the fullback's 19-yard run put him at exactly 1,000 yards and set up the score on the next play. "We were ahead, and he told me to just fall on the ball. But the other guys in the huddle wanted him to have it, and so did said Theismann.

Riggins blasted over from 7 in the first quarter after the Bengals, now 3-12, scored first on a Ken Anderson-to-Archie Griffin, 52-yard touchdown pass. The Bengals came right back on the next series and drove 71 yards before Pete Johnson blasted 1 yard for a touchdown to give Cincinnati a 14-7 lead. Theismann and Harmon tied the score at 14-14 on a 7-yard pass play. The winning touchdown came with 42 seconds remaining in the first half as Theismann, again under a heavy rush, found Harmon, who bulled his way for the 23-yard score, breaking four tackles on the way. The Redskins can win the NFC East title if they defeat the Cowboys and Philadelphia loses to the Oilers.

If Washington loses to Dallas and the Chicago Bears win their game with St. Louis, both teams will end the season with 10-6 records. But going into the final game the Redskins had scored more points than the Bears, which would qualify them for an NFC wild card playoff spot. WASHINGTON (AP) Joe Theismann threw for two touchdowns and John Riggins went past the mark in rushing for the season and collected two TDs Sunday as the Washington Redskins whipped Cincinnati 28-14 and moved into a three-way tie for the National Football Conference East Division lead with one game remaining. "Now we don't have to look to anybody," said Washington coach Jack Pardee, whose team is 10-5, matching Dallas and Philadelphia.

"We're going to Texas. Our destiny is in our hands." While the arch-rival Cowboys and Redskins pair off next weekend, Philadelphia will be at Houston. Theismann had one of his finest days against the Bengals, passing for 296 yards and two TDs to Clarence Harmon, who had to wrestle his way into the end zone after each catch. "We've come to call Clarence 'Kid said Theismann. "He's made the big play for us all season long." Coy Bacon, a defensive end dealt to the Redskins by Cincinnati a year ago, put the clamps on his former teammates almost single-handedly by sacking quarterback Ken Anderson four times, with each play stopping a Bengals drive.

I just wanted to show them that I'm not through playing football," he said. But Theismann reserved his greatest praise for Riggins, who gained 95 yards and whose second touchdown plunge of the day gave him 1,002 yards for the season. "He takes a lot of pressure off me," said Theismann. "He runs like a horse." Theismann said Riggins tried to talk him out of JOGGING SHOES I WARM-UP PUMA ROCKETTES SUITS PUMA HIGH SCHOOL ROrKFT VINYL r1 CARRY BAGS $26.95 SALE 1 1 out SPOT-BILT SPALDING ALL PURPOSE SHOES ALL LEATHER ALL LEATHER WHITE BASEBALL GLOVES Reg. Marshall played the Vikings' final series as an offensive tackle and left the field with three seconds remaining with the game ball. He was carried off the field on the shoulders of his teammates.

Minnesota, 7-8, took a 7-0 load in the first quarter hen Tommy Kramer hit Ahmad Rashad with a 19-yard scoring pass. Rick Danmeier added a 31-yard field goal for the Vikings in the second period. Buffalo quarterback Joe Ferguson, the AFC's leading quarterback for 12 straight weeks, was intercepted twice, both times by linebacker Matt Blair, to halt drives. The Bills. 7-8, got their only points with 4.10 remaining in the game when Nick Mike-Mayer kicked a 24yard field goal.

Ferguson threw eight straight Incomplete passes in the third quarter and finished with 18 of 44 for 227 yards.
