Norman is older and he knows going to die They spend their summers on Golden Pond working things out Chelsea is their daughter pushing at 40 if not over the edge already She has been married once and seems about to be that way again: She has an eligible dentist in tow and a future stepson in the bargain The five of them come together in On Golden Pond the film version of' the well-received stage play Those five characters plus the mailman who appears at odd moments are pretty much ail there is to the cast of On Golden Pond but the cast is formidable and the story memorable nonetheless The principals are played by Henry Fonda (Norman) Katharine Hepburn (Ethel) Jane Fonda (Chelsea) and Dabney Coleman (Bill the dentist) The screenplay by Ernest Thompson who adapted his play is clever and knowing and just right And though On Golden Pond is a shameless bit of manipulation just sophisticated enough in its pacing and dialogue to lull Us into thinking we are watching something profound when in fact we are watching something quite banal the movie is relentlessly enjoyable There are all kinds of reasons not to like this movie and none of them diminishes the story On Golden Pond is the kind of film that bears repeated visits you can return and look for seams and return and try to laugh at the parts where Thompson is working his audience on an emotional yo-yo but such scrutiny does not diminish the story On Golden Pond is an emotional experience of the first order aiming to make us laugh and cry crafted well enough to work just that I magic over and over It is a splendid film The performances and the script are what make On Golden Pond great a director (Mark Rydell) at work here but you get the feeling early and hang on to it that all any one had to do was point the camera The acting by Henry Fonda and Hep- burn is such that Jane seems I the weakest performance of the film- this though she remains the most consistently versatile actress of the late and early Those unfamiliar with the play oh which the film is based need only know that this is the story of affluent articulate old-folks-at-home Henry character is an unreconstructed curmudgeon the kind of geezer- with-a-heart-of-gold who has been in and out of vogue since A Christmas -Carol first hit London is -the doting wife also equipped with the goldeh heart which gives the two leads a certain elemental affinity that might otherwise sink the story in grins and hugs and twilight reminiscences But the movie avoids the depths of the pond largely on the strength of the two old energy And that is something to behold The roles of Norman and Ethel smart and likable people on the edge of life are traps for lesser actors the characters almost demand a pathetic reading a lunge for sympathy and the dependable heartstring-pluck Instead Fonda and Hepburn play persons who we wish existed Perhaps somewhere they do Perhaps Fonda and Hepburn are those persons that kind of turn for both of them During the summer the 48th consecutive summer that Norman and Ethel spend on Golden Pond which is Please turn to GOLDEN POND 2D swing This has been reflected by low attendance at some events and an apparent resistance to buy especially items' at moderate prices Oriental antiques then make up quite a bit of the copy expended lately on market trends $nd forecasts i According to a recent year-end survey published by Phillips an international auction house the pacemakers in oriental antiques include cloisonne enamels well-carved jades late Japanese porcelain and netsuke I was hot surprised to find them all plus many other oriental items at the shows 1 It is not what I learned about each type of item but how I went about it that I would Eke to share' The guide-Enes could apply to anything -i Go to dealers who specialize: Theyave already done the legwork and will have the most examples of the item you want to see The dealers with booths filled with a variety of antiques may know a lot about the one or two oriental pieces in their inventory but they cannot show Please film to ANTIQUES 8D certain dealers to certain shows where they receive a proper welcome but the uninitiated need not feel insecure In the midst of what must look like a confusion of crowds milling about a profusion of goods there is treasure: idea of some kind of treasure There are some mysteries about antiques and some highly specialized fields of collecting but shows afford an opportunity to see and handle and talk about lots of things elegant and ordinary that are traded as antiques or collectibles For the learner shows are the best classrooms for a practical education I tested that theory at two of the first shows of the season Since experience has taught me that the collecting instinct follows quickly on the heels of knowledge I had always avoided learning about oriental antiques It is frankly a difficult field to avoid for the romance of the East has had popular appeal for centuries and there is a great gathering of things oriental at every show In addition the interest in oriental antiques remains strong now even when other traditionally prized antiques are experiencing what the market experts call a down- By HELEN LKOHEN ArtCntic They come south for the winter like the birds and' the tourists but they do not fly and neither do they rest They are antiques merchants on the road with their shops packed into cars and vans and wagons and for the next few months they will work every weekend showing their wares in hired halls throughout this region A well-established breed now the show dealers owe something of their style to both old-time itinerant peddlers and to traveling medicine men being a sincere lot with wonders and marvels to present They are niasters of the soft sell there is room in the they like to sayi" is room in the By which they mean you love it buy it You may not see it t- You may not but if there is a possibility of finding a comparable piece an antiques show the likely arena Few shows have fewer than 50 dealers and most have more than a hundred And though these events are called all the items on display are for sale Show veterans many of them confirmed antiques addicts follow I US sam.
