City Movies Pompano Palm Aire Florida both Eventually Charlie is the sole agent of good the man who tries to help a Mexican girl find a decent life who tries to recover her stolen baby who takes on the US border guards singlehandedly As this Charlie who can be believable only if he seems an ordinary man driven to the edge a man soiled and trying to get clan Nicholson is better than he has been in years He never wry never the too-smart Nicholson sneering at his material his eyes and his eyebrows behave themselves and the script never gives him a wise-guy line Nicholson is a pleasure to watch this role which in turn is a reminder that he remains one of our exceptional actors And even Perrine in the role of the empty-headed blonde acquisitor has an aura about her The screen brightens when she waddles into view But Richardson leads the story away from the actors and into what for him must seem strange and fascinating territory His camera lingers on a highway billboard Wages of Sin Is as such a thing offered remarkable new insight into the American psyche Perhaps he means the sign presage irony Perhaps he seen such a sign before Either way way ahead of him By the end Richardson has contrived a shootout in which incredibly enemies are dispatched by a series of accidents Charlie fights back but his hands are never really bloodied an unacceptable length to travel just to preserve a superficial innocence for the character The Border is nearly worth seeing for Nicholson and Perrine Ultimately despite the provocative theme of the picture it is the actors who are wasted fleMwo MGM 4999 SHERIDAN ST 987-4680 By BILL COSFORD Herald Movie Critic 3 The Border begins with scenes of an earthquake hitting a Mexican village during the baptism of a peasant child There is the buzzing of flies a colorful procession and then the shaking of the earth At this point we can be forgiven for wondering what this interruption of one act of God by another has to do with the illegal immigration of poor Mexicans to the job-rich American Southwest The inference that the Mexicans come to this country not by any motive so shallow as a lust to feed and clothe themselves but to escape catastrophic events that would humble any people is a measure of the muddled view of the film The view is what ruins The Border despite a fine performance by Jack Nicholson and the entertaining burlesque of life in the American underclasses created by British director Tony Richardson (who sees the United States in a funhouse mir- ror) view means that Mexican workers are patient faceless heroes people of endless virtue and that blue-collar Americans are louts albeit louts of considerable complexity probably more to it than that The Border is clearly it means to offer a parable and it has a Shakespearean bloodbath by way of climax a movie that claims to show And version of this particularly seamy real life which begins and ends with spasms of uncontrollable violence is laughable performance is something else He plays Charlie the El Paso border guard who begins to feel the muck tugging at his boots wife (Valerie Perrine) has engineered the move to the El Paso duplex and has begun to implement her version of the good life in comes a waterbed a backyard pool an ensemble of plastic-covered furniture partner (Harvey Keitel) like a lot of the guards has a good thing already going: He goes through the motions of busting shipping a steady quota back over the border while taking kickbacks to let another quota in Charlie sees the hole in the thing: Even an honest agency twice the size could not stop the traffic in aliens as they are a crucial element in the economy of the labor-intensive local industries But he still so sure about joining the scam Then the waterbed
