llEIGHBORS Standard- Speaker FRIDAY, MARCH 13, 1992 Page 8 Dear Abby she got it home, she noticed some cookie crumbs at the bottom. A friend of mine told me she' received a steam iron for a wed- ding present. It was in a regular carton, taped shut, like brand-new items come in, but when she took' it out of the carton to use it, it had, water in it! I'm sure others have, had similar experiences. Have you, Abby? ME IN LANSING MICH. knowledge? What do you think? -PUT-OFF GUEST DEAR GUEST: If the aunt made that announcement without the consent of the bride, she had a lot of nerve.

And if she had the consent of the bride, shame on both of them. Every shower gift calls for a written thank-you. DEAR ABBY: I sure enjoyed those letters from people who told about receiving gifts that had telltale signs of having been used. My cousin received a cookie jar as a wedding shower gift. When DEAR ME: Only once.

bought a brand-new purse, and when I got it home, I found a quarter in the coin purse! It 2 By ABIGAIL VAN BUREN DEAR ABBY: Please help. I don't know how to handle this situation. My daughter is a freshman at a Midwestern coed college. She was assigned to a coed floor in a dormitory with 11 girls and 64 boys. The first week of school, a girl she knows who lives across campus was raped in her dorm room.

Campus police were notified. The boy admitted the rape. His He was moved out of the victim's dorm, across campus, and onto my daughter's coed floor! I am outraged! I definitely want to do something, but my daughter and her roommate are upset because they feel my involvement would label them, and the boy's friends would harass them. The roommate won't tell her parents because she is afraid her parents will make her move back home. These girls are young and naive, but I have to respect her wishes.

Since I am new to the state, I have no contacts or support. I know that local police should have been involved and the victim should have pressed charges, but neither was done. I am deeply concerned for my daughter's safety; the rapist should have at least been moved to an all-male floor! Please tell me what to do. CONCERNED MOTHER DEAR CONCERNED: It is unfortunate that the local police were not notified immediately. If the young man admitted to the rape, he should have been expelled.

And, if your daughter is afraid to speak up because of possible harassment, you should contact the president of the university and request a copy of the school's policies about rape. Also, ask for the university's explanation for its action In this case. Finally, inquire about the school's programs for educating students about their vulnerability to this crime. If there are no programs, something should be started. Hiu iky yx lit J- tents JF 1 At Mr.

and Mrs. Mark P. Cole Karen Stoffa becomes bride of Mark P. Cole Karen Stoffa, Freeland, daughter of Albert G. Stoffa, and the late Joan A.

Stoffa, became the bride of Mark P. Cole, Freeland, son of the late Laura Sulkowsky Cole, on Feb. 21 in St; Anthony's R.C. Church, Freeland. The Rev.

John B. Boyle performed the double ring ceremony. John Gasper was the organist and Judy Opert, the soloist. Taking part in the offertory procession were Jon Dancho, nephew of the bride, and Zachary Chamberlin, godchild of the groom. Following a dinner at Reflections, the couple left for a honey-' moon in the Poconos.

The newlyweds, who will take a cruise to Bermuda in the fall, reside in Freeland. Given in marriage by her father, Albert G. Stoffa, and her brother," Albert G. Stoffa II, the bride was attended by her sister, Marie Dan-, cho, Freeland. Charles Cole, Freeland, served as best man for his brother, and i Jerome Dancho, Freeland, nephew and godchild of the bride, was ringbearer.

A graduate of Bishop Hafey High School, the bride is employed Two versions of Louis Dell'Olio's easy cut with a sophisticated air. At left is a double-breasted jacket in orange silk over a mango rayon tank bodysuit, and at right, three bright colors; crypress green silk double-breasted jacket, magenta silk scoop-neck tank top and chartreuse silk capri pant. A well cut jacket is a blue chip investment for spring DEAR ABBY: I recently attended a bridal shower. Many attended, since the bride-to-be is a well-known, well-liked local woman. After opening all the gifts, the bride stood up and thanked everyone for coming and bringing such lovely gifts.

Then one of her aunts, who was one of the hostesses, stood up and said, "Because of the price of postage these days, the verbal 'thank-you' you just heard from the bride will be the only one you will get. She will send written thank-you notes only to those who were unable to attend the shower." Abby, I think this was very tacky. What gift isn't worth a 29-cent postage stamp to ac in the beauty salon at Boscov s. The groom, a graduate of Freeland High School, is employed by Garland Commercial Industries Freeland. The bride was honored at a shower given by her sisters.

By ELEANOR LAMBERT How long has the jacket been the quintessential pivot of every well-dressed woman's wardrobe? Since Joan or Arc, or maybe before that, from the time girls first began to envy the ease and freedom of male clothing and realized that much of that freedom came from wearing two pieces that let the torso move on its own, not tied to the weight of a long robe. Riding habits helped prove the point Jackets were popularized by young Queen Victoria when Charles Frederick Worth, an English-born designer who went to Paris and became the founder of the French couture, adapted Royal riding gear into street suits for ladies. The Worth tailleur set daytime fashion for nearly a century until the still-famous Chanel suit took over in the 1920s. As the 21st century approaches, Chanel's infinite variety is still with us, but there are other trendsetters. There is Giorgio Armani, Italian designer whose longist, softly tailored jacket is in a class by itself, Ralph Lauren, whose impeccably cut jackets always have a decorative theme, sometimes nautical, sometimes military or ethnic, but always romantic, Saint Laurent's body-conscious, citifed and perfectionist boleros or long fitted jackets, and the ail- American signature shapes of Donna Karan and her former co-designer, Louis Dell'Olio of Anne Klein Company.

Both Karan and Dell'Olio are leaders in the new creed for tailoring in fabrics that move with the body like a dance leotard, even when it is cut full and sashed or closely shaped. In his latest press kit for Anne Kline, Louis Dell'Olio made jackets the keynoters of his collection; teamed with a matching skirt and tank body suit, with the newsy new tight capri pants, classic trousers, or a stretch jersey jumpsuit. It is obvious that a well cut jacket will continue to be the blue chip investment for the Spring. People you know Nicole Renee Terrav. dauchter of Keith and Tammy Terray, 20 S.

On a hook nearby, hang a small hand towel or a roll of paper towels. Hoskins, Neb.

Jennifer Dalesandro, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Dear Heloise: Please tell me how I can remove drin king-glass stains from my beautiful marble table. Joseph Cappellieri, Port Chester, N.Y. Moisture rings caused from drinking glasses that were left sitting on the marble can be removed by rubbing the area with a marble-polishing powder.

Follow the label directions exactly. This can usually be bought at hardware stores or home-improvement centers. If it doesn't remove the stain, then you may need to contact a marble restorer. Check your local phone book for one in your area. Marble absorbs moisture, so always wipe up any spills as soon as possible.

Also, when placing glasses on the marble, always use a coaster or a sheet of paper toweling to keep the moisture from gathering on the marble. --Heloise TRASH-CAN UD Dear Heloise: To keep the inside lid of my steel garbage can plastic that covers your dry-cleaning? Most people don't have the foggiest idea what to do with it once they take it off their clothes. I use the plastic for trash bags.
