'Hoggy" Liddig who broke jail here last summer while awaiting trial for chicken stealing, visited his home recently but though Constable Beers tried to capture him, lie again made his escape. It is said that the Itch will be a poor crop next spring if eating buckwheat cakes produces it, as the hot sun and dry weather has made that grain only about one-third of a crop. A few weeks ago a little daughter of, Mr. John Rice, of Spring township, vas so severely bitten ny a nake mat her life was almost despaired of, but underj treatment of a physician she has Vly recovered.

JOn Monday of last week Jerry Varnes of Newport found a small pistol. When he picked it up to examine it, the thing, as is common with them, went off unexpectedly and lodged its load in Varnes' finger. One of the great frauds upon the taxpayers is the Annual Election Proclamation as published in this county. One-half of the matter is not required by law, and neither half is ever read, but it must all be paid for nevertheless. One day last week as Mr.

Jacob Zelg-er was fording the river at Port Royal, in a two-horse wagon, a large black bass jumped out of the water and landed in the bed of his wagon. It weighed two pounds and two ounces. Lime Quarry Aeoltlent. On Tuesday last, a man named Btahley, working in the quarry belonging to Jesse Butts, was burled under a large mass of falling Rtone. He was shortly after extricated, when it was found that Ills thigh bone wag broken, and he was badly Injured internally. The doctor thought the case a critical one. Very Strange.

On Sunday last as a Mr. Rambler was crossing the Shade Mountain about three miles east of Peru Mills, he found a fine large light bay stallion on the top of the mountain dead. The horse had a bridle and from appearances had pawed a shoe off Just before dying, as the place where he stood the ground was considerable dug up by his pawing and the limbs of the trees were all eaten off as far as the animal could reach. How the horse got there and to whom he belonged la involved in mystery. He must certainly have been placed there by some person as he could not have gotten there himself, but what the motive was that would prompt the fiend to place a poor brute in such a place to die is hard to tell.

Port lioyal Times. A Comical Situation. Several days ago Al. Steininger traveling for C. C.

See-bold with the White Sewing Machlno, made a trip along the Susquehanna. lie overtook an old boatman whom he invited to take a seat in his buggy. Proceeding down along the canal engaged in conversation the horse suddenly became frightened at an object in the road, and ran to one side and tumbled Into the canal. The old man fell backward and at the same time seized Al. by the coat-tall, Al.

fell in an opposite direction and here the two hung kicking and struggling until the old chap let go. Fortunately the horse was hitched to one of the Patent Single Trees and was Boon disengaged from the buggy and was rescued. The picture would have been interesting in a comic Almanac Mid-dlcburg I'ost. Juniata County. We copy the following from the Juniata county papers of last week.

While Charlie Murray was sponging the mouth of a trotting horse, last Thursday afternoon, at the fair, a horse standing by kicked him with such force that lie was picked up under the impression that the life had been kicked out of him. He was restored to consciousness in a short time. A party of citizens of Tuscarora valley went into the region of the headwaters of Licking Creek valley to hunt, last week, which resulted most unfortunately in one of the party named Reighl shooting another of the party named Wilsou in the back of the head, mistaking it for the hind-quarters of a deer. The wounded man was carried first to the camp of the hunters, and afterwards to his home in Tuscarora valley, where he has ever since lain in a critical condition. The gun was loaded witli one of which only entered the head of Wilson another shot passed through an arm, a short distance below the shoulder.

It is the shot in the head that has produced the prostration of the wounded man. On Sunday afternoon last, Mrs. Henry Hersh died very suddenly at her residence in Milford township. She had been visiting at a neighbor's house, and upon her return home, supper not being quite ready, she laid down upon the bed to rest. When supper was ready and the girl went to call her to supper, she discovered that she was dead.

No person was with her when she died. Cumberland County. We copy the following from the Cumberland county papers of last week James Wilson, tenant on Mr. Wm. Noble's farm, south of Carlisle, a few nights since heard thieves at work in his chicken house.

Mr. Wilson quietly procured his shot gun and discharged it, when the three or four thieves left the premises in a hasty manner. One of the thieves left a shirt sleeve sticking to a fence. There were also blood marks seen, which goes to show that one of the party received some of the contents the gun. fcditor The B. F. (The Blaln Fur Company) have opened their regular Fall Company. The President of the Company, the same who was fooled about the bears) took the lead, not long since, In an expedition to the mountain. They holed something, and the 'Squire who is always on the look out for bears, said that it was surely a bear, for he knew it by the tmell.

They unearthed the animals, whith proved to be four tkunkt. The 'Squire's ardor cooled immediately, and the rest of the Company had a very hard time in persuading him from returning home at once. They have, however, succeeded in eapturing about a dozen raccoons this fall. Our Teachers' Examination Is over. The applicants have passed through the dreaded mill, and all except four succeeded In getting certificates, and two of those were from other counties.
