Center Campus of Mian-Dade Community CoHege 300 NE Second Ave Satm wil give a paper -making demonstration on Tuesday Nov from 10 30 am-12 pm the sixth-floor art studios For information caH S77-A79S THE BED SCULPTURES introduce handmade paper 1 into work a material she learned to mold and shape into many of the significant forms on exhibit in I this show Paper was the natural domesticated um for the series of paper plates that offer up whole lunches or just a choice of mini-napkins But Satin can bring power and seriousness to paper by massing sheets of it into structures that link a for- mal sculptural presence to the informal and often un- dulating nature of their substance Both Amphtstylars I and In Situ Luxe two complex paper constructions rely for their effects on this interplay between outward authority and implied fragility Made up of a series of like units they have the added capability of being con- verted into alternative installations The ble units are columns and the spaces they create in their configurations are as basic to three-dimensional form as building blocks to a solid unchanging structure most recent works in paper are books book papers bundled with clay sheets and drawings The books and drawings take paper back to its more con- ventional function though books are not for reading and her drawings are best described as works John and Yoko Sing Their Love a John Lennon LENNON From I Rock Roll album in February 1975): sitting back watching son Sean grow up and keeping house LENNON HAS FOUND that it is difficult for some people to conceive of a reason for a major rock star to just stop making records and be without a record label for so long As the lyrics state: "When I say that OK they look at me kind of strangeSurely not happy now you no longer play the He says here that he is happy indeed Lennon is playing the game again but by his own rules His songs are mostly soft or mid-tempo rock with nary a New Wave or hard-rock touch (the widely publi- cized studio work by Rick Nielsen and other members of Cheap Trick is nowhere to be heard) The biggest difference between his songs on Double Fantasy and those on Walls and Bridges his last collection of original material is the directness and accessibility of the new themes Musically John doing much new He is still using echoes and multi-tracking for his voice There are quite a few horns and none of the weird strings that often lurked on solo efforts One song the rough-edged Losing You could have fit in on The Beatles (the White Album) or Abbey Road while Cleanup Time leans in a rhythm-and-blues direction A SLOW DREAMY love song Woman seems the most likely candidate for other artists to record (trivia fans may hote that Paul McCartney once wrote a song with the same title for Peter and Gordon) Dear Yoko is basically a rewrite of Oh Yoko from the Imagine album with the addition of a fake-country background have been released if her husband an ex-Beatle with a one-quarter interest in Apple Records That said her songs on Double fantasy will not make the average listener double up in aural pain Kiss Kiss Kiss the flipside of Starling Over (these two never give up) is a sort of rock dance number that sounds a lot like the warblings of Lene Iovich as does Give Me Something The only sign of the shrieker of old comes briefly at the end of Kiss Kiss Kiss and in the mediocre I'm Moving On I Your Angel is an attempt at a 1930s sound full of cotton-candy wishing and but Yoko really have the vocal range to pull it off Beautiful Boys is a pleasant answer to Beautiful Boy with Yoko singing to John and Sean Every Man Has a Woman Who Loves Him is just boring THAT THE YOKO songs are not worse must be seen as a tribute to Improved perception of public taste and to modern recording techniques that can enhance anyone's voice and put something interesting in the blandest song Overall the dynamics of Double Fantasy are excellent with clear stereo separation and a very clean sound Producers Lennon Ono and' hard-rock veteran Jack Douglas assisted by an army of engineers assistant engineers musical associates production assistants remixers and oh yes musicians have made a state-of-the-art studio LP What would Phil to Spector think? Double Fantasy is not the great statement about the 1980s that some might have expected but it is a start Lennon promises that a concert tour and more albums will be forthcoming vacation's over Beautiful Boy (Darling Boy) is from John the loving father to Sean the five-year-old boy Cliches abound on this one stuff like day in every way getting better and It is a veritable marshmallow of a song fluffy as a cloud but what would one expect of a song to the kid? Lennon cultists are advised to stop the remarks about domestic side NOW ABOUT the Yoko Ono contributions to Double Fantasy It was bad enough when Lennon put her stuff on the flip sides of the singles Instant Karma and Give Peace a Chance I resent having to sit through her stuff to get to John's new songs (they are sequenced in boy-girl-boy-girl order) and would have rather had 14 new Lennon numbers than a vinyl exercise in equality of the sexes Everyone who has heard on the previous LennonOno LPs or the four solo albums she made in the 1970s knows they never would A thrilling new attraction at the Magic Kingdom' Free from Greyhound!
