0IORUS LINE Broadway's longest running, multi-award-winning show "A Chorus Line" plays Sunday afternoon at De iter's Community Hall, formerly West Abbey Theatre, 4525 Soquel Drive, Soquel. Encore Productions and Robert Michael Productions of San Francisco co-produce this community theatre rendition. "A Chorus Line" has been recently released to community theatre organizations, and this is its premiere run in Northern California. Melanie Paizis does the choreography and staging, with Chuck Largent producing, George Rowe co-directing and Richard Burdick providing the music direction for the 14-piece orchestra. The 29-member cast features top local dancers and musical theater per-rformers.

The local production has been winning rave reviews since opening last month. Dinner begins at 1:15 p.m. and the show at 2:30. For more information call 438-6228. TAR SWINGING The Mid-County Senior Center Choralierspresent their monthly variety show at 2 p.m.

JERRY'S KIDS 7-Eleven Food Stores present a concert to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association at 7 p.m. Sunday at the Nelson Center. QANTA CRUZ CONTRADANCE -The monthly contradance swings off to a start at 7:30 Sunday evening at the Portuguese CPDES Hall near Harvey West Park. Proceeds go the the Bay Area Country Dance So- ciety. Each dance is taught and then called by Santa Cruz's Linda Durant and Jamie Wylde to the music of The Empty Pockets String Band. Basic instruction begins at 7:30 p.m., with everyone on the floor by 8. MORTHWIND North wind presents its melodic jazz at 8 Sunday evening at the Kuumbwa Jazz Center.

Pianist George Winston produced North wind's first album "River Flight" and has introduced the group as guest artists on some of his tours. Their music features keyboards, saxophone, guitar and hand drum in a blend of jazz, folk, blues and new age impressionism. RlG YOUTH Big Youth and the Ark Angels headline a Sunday night show at the Catalyst sponsored by radio station KUSP 89 FM. Special guests will also be on hand. Big Youth, described as the greatest dub-poet ever born in Jamaica, has had a number of hits on the reggae charts in the international market.

The group performs music by the Stones, Kinks, Doors, original songs and classic rock songs of the '50s and '60s.

Saturday VflER PEOPLE Tandy Beal and Friends present the beach event "Mer People" Saturday and Sunday mornings at 8:30 on the beach just north of the lighthouse on West Cliff Drive. This free event, featuring Santa Cruz' nationally-acclaimed dancer choreographer, is made poss.ble by a Santa Cruz City Arts Commission grant. J)UPRE DEBUT St. John the Baptist Episcopal Church opens its 1985-86 season with a concert for piano and organ at 8 p.m. Saturday.

Pat Burns and William Visscher perform works by Beethoven, Rachmaninoff, Chopin, Vivaldi, J.S. Bach and Krell. A highlight will be the area premier of "Variation on Two Themes" for piano and organ by Marcel Dupre. The Capitola church is located at the corner of Oakland Avenue and Escalona Drive. Violin sonatas violinist John Creighton Murray and pianist-harpsichordist Robert Bowman present a concert of 19th century violin sonatas at 8 p.m. Saturday in the Cabrillo College Theater. The college's division of performing arts and the Cultural Council of Santa Cruz County are sponsoring the performance which includes works by Brahms, Grieg and Franck. Murray, a New York City native who made his debut at age 17, has studied under some of the greatest violinists of the world and makes regular appearances at Carnegie Hall. Bowman has performed extensively in California, New York, Illinois, Oregon and Virginia for the last 24 years as a piano and harpsichord recitalist, chamber music performer and soloist with orchestra.
