television reporting Bette Swenson Orsini and Charles Stafford of the St Petersburg (Fla) Times won the national reporting award for their investigation of the Church of Scientology The investigation of the church had been nominated in the public service award but the board moved it to the national reporting category Other 1979 Pulitzer Prize winners in journalism: Public Survicr Gannett News which made the recommendations to Columbia University that resulted in Monday's Pulitzer Prizes consists of 16 journalists and educators The president is Clayton Kirkpatrick president and chief executive officer of the Chicago Tribune Others are Howard Hays Jr editor and co-publisher Riverside (Calif) Press-Enterprise John Hughes president of Hughes Newspapers Inc Richard Leonard editor and vice president of The Milwaukee Journal James Re- ston columnist for The New York Times: William McGill president of Columbia University Osborn Elliott dean of the Columbia Graduate School of Journalism Also John Cowles Jr president of The Min neapolis Star and Tribune Co Hanna Gray president of the University of Chicago: Lee Hills editorial chairman of Knight-Ridder News papers Eugene Patterson editor and presi dent The St Petersburg (Fla) Times Warren Phillips chairman and chief executive of Dow Jones Co Joseph Pulitzer Jr editor and pub lisher St Louis Post-Dispatch William Rasp berry columnist The Washington Post Roger Wilkins formerly with The New York Times Thomas Winship editor of The Boston Globe Richard Baker a professor of journalism at Columbia served as the secretary Before making its recommendations the board had received reports from 18 juries consisting of 76 journalists and other members Except for the gold medal in the category of meritorious public service by a newspaper each award carries a prize of $1000 newspaper Robert Ingle Herald managing editor said he doubted that the honor for Blais' writing comes as a surprise to Tropic magazine's readers is the author of a book The Sav You Can't Have a Baby published in 1979 by WW Norton The Herald won its first Pulitzer Prize for meritorious public service in 1951 for its reporting about organized crime in Miami under the leadership of then-Managing Editor Lee Hills Its second came-in 1967 when Gene Miller won the local investigative prize for reporting that helped to free two persons Mary Katherin Hampton and Joseph Shea who had been wrongfully convicted of murder Miller won a Pulitzer Prize for local reporting again in 1976 his persistent and courageous reporting over 8'2 years that led to the exoneration and release of two Freddie Pitts and Wilbert Lee They had twice been tried for murder and wrongfully convicted and sentenced to death Miller is the only reporter who has twice won Pulitzer Prizes for local reporting Hills now editorial chairman of Knight-Ridder Newspapers said The most recent award is of the continuing commitment by successive Herald editors to publish the superior newspaper in South Florida The fact that Knight-Ridder papers have won 23 Pulitzers is no accident We believe that editorial excellence is what this business is all about" Hills himself won a second Pulitzer Prize as editor of The Detroit Free Press in 1956 for coverage of United Auto Workers negotiations with Ford Motor Co and General Motors Another editor closely associated with The Herald John Knight formerly Herald publisher and now editor emeritus of Knight-Ridder Newspapers won a Pulitzer Prize for distinguished editorial writing in 1968 In the 1979 awards a second Knight-Ridder paper The Philadelphia Inquirer won its sixth straight Pulitzer Prize It was in the general local reporting category for its coverage of- the Three Mile Island nuclear accident near Harrisburg Pa The Inquirer has won more consecutive Pulitzers than any other paper except The New York Times which won nine awards in eight straight years 1940-1947' The Miami News' Don Wright won the 1979 prize for editorial cartoons his second The Boston Globe won three 1979 awards for special local reporting commentary and criticism That tied a New York Times record The Times won prizes for international reporting commentary and criticism in 1978 Stephen A Kurkjian Alexander Hawes Jr Nils Bruzclius Joan Vennochi and Robert Porterfield of The Globe received the special local reporting prize for their Pulitzer Prize for fiction The book had been critically acclaimed but stirred controversy over the fact that Mailer and his publisher have termed it a work of fiction even though it tells of real people involved in real events The prize was Mailer's second Pulitzer he won in 1969 for his Armies of the Night in the non-fiction category Lanford Wilson won the drama prize for Talley's lolly a
