a a Telephone Adams 170 Adama Nema Section Office Center Street TEN THE NORTH ADAMS, MASSACHUSETTS, TRANSCRIPT TUESDAY AFTERNOON, AUGUST 11, 1953 Three Auto Mishaps Reported to Police; Two Cause Injuries Three auto accidents in two of which minor injuries occurred, were reported to the Adams lice yesterday. At 4.10 o'clock, John S. Babula, 24, of 41 Crotteau street, reported he was driving north on Summer street at a slow rate speed when, near Smith street, five- year-old William Lincoln of 49 Summer street ran out from his right into the road between parked cars and into the side of his car. Mr. Babula said he stopped at once and got out of his car.

As he went to the boy, who had fallen to the ground. said the child's mother on the scene. They took child to the office of Dr. Bernard C. Desrochers who found the child had a bump on right side of his forehead.

of Phil. lips hill reported at 4.05 o'clock in the afternoon that he was driving south on Commercial street when a bicycle, operated by Paul Lavigne, 12, of 27 Edmund street. with his brother, Leo, 9. riding on the handlebars. ran into the right rear fender of his car.

He said the boys remained on the bicycle and he took them to the office of Dr. Ar: thur W. Burckel who found Paul had a bump on the head as a suit of hitting the car and cut on his left thigh. Mr. Lefebvre took the boys their home.

The accident was reported to Patrolman Joseph O. Cardonnell the police station. Mrs. Joan Bailot. 21, of 60 Maple street reported that at 11.25 o'clock yesterday morning she was driving a light truck on Crotteau street and as she turned into Cook street a radio on the front seat started to slide.

She said she reached with one of her hands to hold the radio and as she did she lost control of the car which swerved to the left and through a hedge onto the lawn of the Ernest Cynarski home at 7 Cook street. The only damage was to the hedge and Mrs. Bailot. was not injured. Patrolman John P.

Coussoule investigated. Birth A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Wilfrid J. DeBlois of 59 Melrose: street this morning at the W.

B. Plunkett Memorial hospital. Mrs. DeBlois is the former Marie Daly of Newton Center. Mr.

Cote Pennington Unlicensed Dog Charge Results In Fine of $5 After he had entered a plea ot guiity, Jacob Hermann; 30, of 6 Pleasant street was fined. $5. by Special Justice Henry W. Kaliss in district. court this morning on a charge of keeping an unlicensed dog.

Chief of Police. Edward W. Reid told the court that Hermann was summoned last: night at 10.50 o'clock after complaint had made to the police that there was a barking dog at his home. Chief Reid further stated that last May a check was made after Hermann dog had bitten a person, and when it was found the dog was not licensed Hermann was told to get it licensed. Hermann said today he plans to get rid of the dog.

Local and Personal Lieut. John A. Weiss of the U. S. army returned to duty today at Fort Bragg, N.

after spending a week end leave with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Weiss of 30 Upton street. Mr. and Mrs.

Weiss and another son, Robert, returned Saturday from a- vacation trip to Canada that included a visit to the shrine of St. A Anne de Beaupre, Quebec. Mrs. Gerald W. Green and her daughters, Geraldine, Bernice and Barbara, of West Hartford, are visiting her mother, Mrs.

N. Sawyer. Mrs. James Brown, mother of Mrs. Noyes Wheeler, went to Boston Friday to enter a hospital for treatment.

She expects to remain there for a few weeks. Pvt. Nelson Reynolds, who had been spending a 10-day furlough with his mother, Mrs. Sam Reynolds, returned today to Arlington, where he Is stationed. Eugene Gebarowski of North street have nounced the engagement of their daughter, Miss Catherine Julia Gebarowski, to George Henry Cooper, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Duffy of 65 Crane nue, Dalton. Miss. Gebarowski was graduated from Adams high school last June.

She is employed irr the office of Wilton E. Owen, Grove street, Adams. Mr. Cooper was graduated from Dalton high school in 1951. He was employed by Crane company in Dalton before enlisting in the Navy in August, 1951.

He is now stationed aboard the U.S.S.. Tortuga as a fireman pipefitter. He recently returned from a year's duty in waters around Korea and Japan. No date has been set for the wedding. Helen Wood to Wed Man From Pittsfield of North State Road.

Mr. and Mrs. Alvan R. Wood of Hoosac lake have announced the engagement of their daugh ter, Helen Louise, to James T. McCarthy, son of.

Mr. and Mrs. William McCarthy of 9 Kellogg street, Pittsfield. Miss, Wood is employed as a nurse on the staff of the field Visiting Nurse association. She is a 1949 graduate of Pittsfield high school and of the Union University School of Nursing in 1952.

Mr. McCarthy is also a 1949 graduate of Pittsfield high school. He is employed as a draftsman rat the Pittsfield works of the General Electric company. He was recently graduated from the G.E. apprentice drafting course.

Polish War Veterans To Have Public Picnic Plans a public picnic next Sunday at Andy's grove were made by the Polish War Veterans Post No. 23 at a meeting Sunday afternoon at the Victory street hall. The affair is to start at 1:00 o'clock with a social and sports program to feature the afternoon. Comdr. Joseph Nowicki is general chairman.

Social Hour to Follow Meeting of Turners meeting of the Adams Turners will be held this evening at 8 o'clock in Turn hall. A social hour with refreshments will follow the session. Turner Senior Women Meet Tomorrow Night A meeting of the Turners Womens' senior auxiliary will be held at 7:30 o'clock tomorrow evening in Turn hall. Whist will be played after the meeting. 2.58-Inch Rainfall Aids Gardens, Lawns But Causes Washouts While rain totaling 2.58 inches so far this week has helped parched gardens and lawns, it has afforded only slight relief for Adams' water supply and has caused extra work for Adams highway department employes.

Of the total rainfall of 2.58 inches the 24-hour period ending at 8 o'clock this morning brought 1.90 inches while for the similar period ending yesterday morning the rainfall was .68 of an inch as recorded at the Zylonite station of the New England Power company. At Bassett reservoir, Adams' only water storage basin, the water this morning was 16 inches below the level of the dam. Supt. Ronald E. Griswold of the Adams Fire district stated this morning it probably would be necessary to operate the artesian well pumps at least 10 hours.

Yesterday the pumps were in operation for 11 hours. All last week they were operated 15 to 16 hours a day. Rain came so fast during a portion of yesterday, Supt. Griswold said, that it ran off instead soaking into the ground. Employes of the highway department today had the task of using stiff brooms and shovels to clean debris brought by the fast-moving water to a number of streets yesterday when minor washouts occurred.

On Edmund street a section of road surface 10 feet square was washed out when a catch basin cover was pushed into the street by an overflow of water. John Durrell, Wins In Junior Tournament John Durrell, won the annual junior tournament at the Forest Park Country club, it was announced today by club officials. He defeated Joseph Neiley one up on the 19th hole. A trophy will be presented the winner. Sixteen junior members qualified for the tournament open to members under the 20-year age limit, Meeting on Wednesday For Past Noble Grands Past noble grands of Golden Link Rebekah lodge will be tertained tomorrow evening at the home of Mrs.

Scott of 112 Columbia street and his sister, Mrs. David Carduff of Springfield, formerly of Adams, by another sister, Mrs. Paul Clough also a former Adams dent, at a recent reunion at the Clough home in Rochester, N.

Y. Mr. Scott, who visited his sonin-law and daughter, Dr. and Mrs. Francis L.

Utley and family, of Columbus, Ohio, for the past two weeks, Rochester was accompanied as far by Mrs. Carduff. the two visited Mrs. Clough who had returned two weeks previously from the European tour that included visits to England, France, Germany, Italy, Switzerland and Scotland. At Kelso, Scotland, Mrs.

Clough visited a cousin, Miss Ella Pow, another former Adams resident and sister of Robert F. Pow of 29 Summer street. Miss Pow, who will be remembered by many of the older Adams residents, resided in Adams. as a child and young woman, leaving here to return to Scotland after the death of her parents. Mrs.

Clough gave her brother and sister many interesting descriptions of the Queen Elizabeth coronation parade which she witnessed from a reserved seat on the coronation route near Westminster abbey. East Side Club Bake Draws Good Attendance Between 175 and 200 persons attended an annual clambake, sponsored by the East Side Citizens' club, Sunday at the East Cheshire picnic area. Among the out-of-town guests were State Sen. Silvio O. Conte of Pittsfield and Chairman Clinton J.

Foster of the county commissioners, of Stockbridge. Features of the afternoon included a softball game, horseshoe pitching and other outdoor sports. Selectman Walter F. Urban, club president, was general chair. man in charge of arrangements.

Five Are Sought In Draft Board Call for Sept. 1 Five registrants are sought for a selective service examination inI a call received this morning by Mrs. Sabina Derengowski, clerk of the Adams board. The call is for Tuesday, Sept. 1 when the men will go to Springfield for physical examina-1 tions.

No calls for either examination or induction were received for this month or last month. Tarring of Roads Is Resumed Today Road tarring work was ed in Adams today by a truck the Westfield branch of the Koppers company. Weather permitting, it was planned to apply a coating of tar to Sayles, Noonan and streets as well as Maple street from Forest Park avenue to the West road, and also on avenue. ams high school with the 1951 class, who has the WAVE rating of hospitalman, is on the staff at the Chelsea Naval hospital. Mr. Meehan, a graduate Auburn high school, was discharged from the navy June 15 after four years of duty. The wedding will take place Oct. 10 at St.

Judge and Mrs. Hanlon and their two sons, Timothy and Terrance, plan to move to Pittsfield later this month. Mr. and Mrs. Verow plan to occupy their new home Sept.
