The girl, Patti Pritchard, was found in good condition Friday on the shore of Vandenberg Air Force Base, 150 miles up the coast from Los Angeles. She fell off her grandparents' boat, the Putty Ann, sometime Thursday night.

Later Friday, base personnel found the body of her grandmother, Betty Pritchard, washed up on the shoreline not far from remnants of the boat, Coast Guard Petty Officer Tony Chilelli said. "We have totally saturated the area where the debris and body were found, and there's no trace of the grandfather," Chilelli said. He identified the man as Jim Pritchard but said he did not know the couple's ages. The grandparents were the girl's legal guardians, he said.
