Bill Sampson, 25, was wounded twice about 6:30 a.m., said sheriff's Deputy Paul Snow. Sampson was reported in serious but stable condition at San Pedro and Peninsula Hospital. The gunfire apparently came from inside the house near where Sampson was standing.

The sheriff's special weapons team surrounded the house on West Seventh Street and went in about 90 minutes later, deputies said, but the suspect had escaped. Two bullet holes wJre found in the window of an upstairs apartment, apparently from shots fired from inside the room, according to sheriff's Lt. Ben Hatfield. A rifle found on the street a block away was being checked by the crime laboratory for fingerprints and to determine if bullets from the weapon matched those which hit Sampson. The victim told deputies he did not know who lived at the house.

The bettor, described as being "about 40," walked Into the Union Plaza Hotel Dec. 29, accompanied by another man and a woman, and announced he wanted to place the bizarre wager, said hotel spokesman Frank Maggio.

Handicapper Bob Martin laughed and said the odds against such an event were about a million to one, Maggio said, but when he realized the man was serious, Martin quoted 70-1 odds and the man took the bet. "Even the greatest prophets, including Nostradamus, didn't narrow their predictions down to one day," Maggio said, "but he paid for the bet with hundred dollar bills and some cashier's checks." The unidentified man, who stood to win $350,000 if the quake had struck, pocketed his receipt and walked out with his friends, Maggio said. The man told hotel officials he was from Virginia, but they declined to Identify him. dacron II poly ttr I I standard, aueen king sizes A v.s..'."X'.-''-j to twin r.9.99 7.99 fu rag. 12.910.39 aueen rg.
