i The Sacramento Bee i Saturday May 13 2000 05 METROREGIONAL OBITUARIES School: Sketchy funding plan worries lawmakers Drummer Perry Leslie Jones man of many musical talents 4 I 1' Perry Leslie Jones Born to a musical family he was honored for contributions to the arts By Paula Thorpe Bee Metro Staff Continued from page 111 would allocate $300 million from the states general fund to the veterinary school "I think the senator under stands the magnitude of our situation" Pascoe said "It's the only vet school in the state and it's in trouble" Andrew House legislative assistant to Poochigian said members of the Senate Education Committee who heard the bill in April were "very concerned" that UC Davis administrators did not seem to have a solid funding plan including relying on a bond yet to be passed There was strong bipartisan support to help the veterinary school House said but a realization among committee members that legislative oversight was necessary "We're not just going to hand over POO million and say 'problem solved' House said "All steps of the project will be reviewed by the state Department of Finance" The bill has been held in committee and legislators are working to get the allocation included in the budget Poochigian said The building plan's first two projects an instructional laboratory and an athletic performance laboratory for horses are in the initial planning stages and are slated fOr a 2002 completion date By 2005 projects to restore the school's full accreditation should be completed under the plan They include a 30000-square-foot expansion of the Center Companion Animal Health a new 67000-square-foot building for classrooms instructional laboratories and faculty offices as well as a 125000-square-fOot teaching research and clinical building The school is up for an accreditation review again this year and must decide whether to ask for a site review or a two-year extension before the AVMA accreditation council meets in October To gain an extension the university must show it has made progress to correct the deficiencies said Don Simmons an AVMA official If an extension is not granted the school would lose its accreditation and be required to close Simmons said UC Davis officials are trying to determine if the steps they have taken are enough to prompt the AVMA to restore full accreditation or if they are likely to face more years of the uncertain limited status Keller said the plan as well as the money allotted should provide "substantial evidence that we are on the right track" Kenton Big Band the Buddy Rich Band the
