wm ww r- 9m r1 'rrr r- wr-rv r'y 4 SECTION Sunday November 16 1980 CLASSIFIED 15C Sljc ittiami Herald 000 Hurricanes Sputter 24-17 to a Winning Season By JIM MARTZ Herald Sports Writer NASHVILLE Tenn Ordinarily a narrow victory over a 16-point underdog hardly would be worth writing home about to mom a girlfriend or even the dog But there was reason for the University of Miami to rejoice Saturday after a 24-17 football victory over Vanderbilt before 12-830 at Dudley Field The bottom line was a triumph and that gave the Hurricanes a 6-3 record and a winning season and kept their faint bowl hopes alive lot of things happened that make a coach pull his hair said UM Coach Howard Schnellenberger his mustache still intact but tattered there were a lot of things in which you could question my coaching such as people lining up on the wrong side highlighted by errors kept us from breaking the game open early But always happy with a victory worry about performance on the practice field Two apparent touchdown passes by Jim Kelly were called back because of penalties and the Hurricanes squandered several other chances after the defense had forced turnovers But they lose their poise against a team that was 1-7 and had lost 44 of its last 52 games and they kept intact their chance of producing the best record at Miami since the 1967 team went 7-4 I A SENIOR and never been said split end Pat Walker care if we won by one point take it any way It was their field and they were hungry and out to get us They going to roll over and play dead got off to a bad start but I never felt they were going to beat us We fired up we sharp But we get scared It was just a matter of time when we would get it together They have the type of team to overpower us not bragging but I knew we had too much pride to Kelly shaking off the soreness of a hip pointer that had sidelined him last week fired touchdown passes of 59 yards to halfback Mark Rush and nine yards to flanker Jim Joiner against a secondary that included three freshmen Mike Rodrigue flipped an 11 -yard TD pass to flanker Larry Brodsky and Danny Miller kicked three extra points and a 35-yard field goal that broke Chris school record of 31 career field goals Vanderbilt grabbed a 7-0 lead on a flea-flicker touchdown pass of 51 yards from flanker Wamon Buggs to split end Charles Edwards And the Commodores drove 66 yards to a 14-7 lead in the second quarter on a 14-yard run by running back Terry Potter But defense limited Vanderbilt to a 26-yard field goal by Mike Woodard in the second half THE COMMODORES led in first downs (15-13) rushing yards (205-129) and total yardage (317-268) But the costly statistic they led overwhelmingly was turnovers (9-1) They lost six of seven fumbles and quarterback Whit Taylor was intercepted three times nine turnovers seemed like said Vanderbilt Coach George MacIntyre a former UM quarterback and assistant coach offense I thought our receivers played well but we protect Whit very well I thought our defense played well but the big plays killed Big plays also killed the chances of blowing out Vanderbilt just as happened in last 23-10 victory over lackluster East Carolina Here are two examples that occurred in the third quarter Turn to Page 9C Col 2 Bowl Nebraska Or Sooners The OB Foe By EDWIN POPE Herald Sports Editor The Orange Bowl bottom line somehow slipped through a crack Only late Saturday after sealing a deal with Florida State for a New Night football date did the OBC announce the fact that its payoff to both the Seminoles and still-to-be-decided Big Eight champions will be $15 million apiece guess we get the word OBC President Nick Crane said payoff went up $200000 per team when we renegotiated our television contract with Never mind Color Florida State delighted came a chorus of Seminole voices from Coach Bobby Tallahassee office when Crane issued the invitation through a conference-call hookup Then voice low with each word carefully enunciated filtered back through the phone: you I have talked with Dr Bemie Sliger FSU president and Phil Fordyce interim athletic director I just had a chance to talk with our players and they are So were an estimated 1500 to 2000 FSU backers waiting for Bowden to walk into Campbell Stadium and make the official announcement So will Nebraska if the Cornhuskers beat Oklahoma next Saturday in Lincoln and win the Big Eight title and bid They would have a pair of literally golden opportunities to avenge an earlier 18-14 loss to FSU and take a crack at the national title They could get it by beating Oklahoma and then FSU if Notre Dame topples firstrated Georgia in the Sugar Bowl Previously second-rated Southern Cal dropped back after a 20-10 loss to Washington Nebraska this week was rated third by United Press International behind Georgia and Southern Cal and fourth by the Associated Press with FSU a notch ahead FSU can make No 1 by beating Florida at Tallahassee Dec 6 and then Nebraska if Georgia loses But the Seminoles are going to cause a lot of sweating before they ever get to Miami Crane said sweat out FSU-Florida Just like the Sugar Bowl has to sweat out Notre game against Southern Cal Dec 6 Notre Dame actually has to play two more games including Air Force before the Sugar Bowl There are plenty of risks especially in a season like this where nothing is certain But we think we have a great bowl have a rematch either way either FSU-Nebraska a rematch of this season or FSU-Oklahoma a rematch of last Orange Bowl when the Sooners beat the Seminoles 24-7 Naturally FSU-Nebraska would be more attractive Either would be Bowden bought that in spades learned a lot playing in the last Orange Bowl and think we can improve on he said feeling is that there is a very good chance the national championship can be settled in the Orange Bowl Psychologically it is a disadvantage when you play somebody already beaten But we want to play the best team we Nebraska will vouch for the psychological disadvantage It had to meet Oklahoma in the 1979 OBC after whipping the Sooners 17-9 in regular season Oklahoma came back to win the Orange Bowl 31-24 Nebraska gets in" Crane said would be a great incentive for them against FSU Besides the New York Times computer poll rates Nebraska first and FSU second I see how we could have done much I either Neither does Dan McNamara OBC general manager The avowed purpose is to attract tourists FSU and either team that wins the Big Eight will bring fans in wholesale lots Bowl Li no up Orange Bowl Florida State (9-1) vs riddled for 407 yards by the Wildcats had left Peace and his offensive troops only 34 seconds to move from their 32 after forcing final punt All timeouts had been expended too Does that sound familiar? Georgia had more time last week a minute and 20 seconds but also more yards 93 And the Bulldogs got them all in 17 seconds as receiver Lindsay Scott turned Buck desperation pass into a touchdown dash and 26-21 salvation week showed us anything could Peace said think we learned a little bit from that was a little down when we went back out there that final time But tackle Joe Wickline one of our seniors Turn to Page 8C Col 2 By GARY LONG Herald Sports Writer LEXINGTON Ky Miracles work both ways It took one for the Georgia Bulldogs to beat Florida just one week ago It took another for Florida to overcome a lackluster performance Saturday for a last-play 17-15 victory over Kentucky and a bid to play the University of Maryland in the Tangerine Bowl in Orlando Saturday Dec 20 The Gators had squandered a 14-6 halftime lead and appeared doomed to a 15-14 defeat when Brian 31 -yard field-goal attempt with 2:26 left sailed just outside the left upright But defense and freshman quarterback Wayne Peace gave Clark a chance to redeem himself and the final six seconds ticked away as 34-yard field goal was sailing straight and true Kentucky had taken a 15-14 lead as sopho more Charlie Jackson took a pitch around left end eluded lunging linebacker David Lit-tie'and scored following a Florida fumble at its six But a two-point conversion failed as Florida nose guard Robin Fisher shot through to dump McCrimmon as he tried to bootleg around his left end That made all the difference when Clark capitalized on his second chance to sweeten what had been a sour performance by the Gators THE GATORS reportedly would have received a Tangerine Bowl bid even if they had lost but dramatic kick erased any doubt The invitation was waiting when the Gators landed back in Gainesville Reminded that Orlando site of the Tangerine Bowl is not even 100 miles from the Florida campus senior receiver Cris Collins-worth quipped been waiting four years play a bowl game out on Irish Escape With a Sugar-Coated Victory 7-0 plays after a fumble recovery was the only touchdown The victory gave Notre Dame an 8-0-1 record Alabama suffered its second setback in 10 games but accepted a bid to the Cotton Bowl against Baylor IT MARKED the third time in eight years that a loss to Notre Dame knocked Alabama out of a shot at the national championship and it gave the Irish a 4-0 record against the Crimson Tide game has been in the back of our minds all said Notre Dame quarterback Blair Kiel was a super fantastic game between super fantastic teams and we were fortunate to come out on Coach Dan Devine said Notre domination of Alabama was coincidence i two yards each time and scoring with 6:02 left in the second quarter is an understatement to say that the best team won" said Alabama Coach Bear Bryant "We are not used to playing against a team that strong We never established anything offensively they let us I would have liked to have made them go more than four yards for the touchdown but not sure they have done it THE IRISH then turned things over to their stingy defense which handed Alabama its first shutout in 54 games dating back ta early in the 1976 season It was the fifth consecutive game in which Notre Dame did not Turn to Page 7C Col I i BIRMINGHAM Ala (AP) Notre Dame still has number and that number is 4-0 the Notre Dame players chanted Saturday after defeating Alabama 7-0 Saturday and ending the Crimson quest for an unprecendented third consecutive national championship they shouted as they entered their dressing room A few moments later the sixth-ranked Irish accepted an invitation to meet top-rated Georgia in the Sugar Bowl on New Day "This means we have a chance to be the national champion when we beat a team as good as said Phil Carter whose two-yard plunge in the second period two would be the proper He said game was college football is all about a clean hard-fought game between two bunches of super kids just as big a thrill for us to play Alabama as it is for Alabama to play Notre Dame To our kids Alabama is just as big a name as Notre Dame is to NOTRE DAME had failed to score less than a minute before TD when freshman Kiel fumbled a snap and Warren Lyles recovered for Alabama at the one-yard line But two plays later Alabama quarterback Don Jacobs botched a handoff to fullback Billy Jackson and defensive end Scott Zettek recovered for Notre Dame at the four Carter slammed twice over right guard picking up.
