WE QUOTE BT PHONE 493 1 67th St 1 4229 Dime Hwy 1 Miami 6S1-6166 251-5624 By JACK ANDERSON Herald TV-Redle editor While cable-TV entrepreneurs are pushing the webbing of Dade County with transmission lines two closed-circuit non-cable companies are out there huckstering a private program service of their own The message is that homeowners need not wait until a cable-TV firm wires their street to get those first-run movies big sports events and the rest of the extra special programs been hearing about The two companies Private Channel Club and ON TV are offering for a monthly fee this closed circuit programming now And over the air Not via transmission cable Private Channel Club has been in business hereabouts for almost five years ON TV has been a nighttime service of WKID (Ch 51) since last February What is new about both operations is that they have now expanded service into individual homes Until recently and particularly in Private Channel case the service was limited to multiple-unit dwellings apartment houses and hotels PRIVATE Channel Club which transmits its service by microwave from 1 Biscayne Tower in downtown Miami is now able to reach individual homes by installing on a lease basis a special antenna at the home of a would-be subscriber Ch ON TV service also calls for a special antenna adjusted in each case to the distance 1400 10th Ave Miami land Cthfr HouM 545-8800 Mu only A LIMITED NUMBER AT THESE PRICES! JU White Westinghouse airs on Private Channel Club to Be Shown on ON TV Office program service Time-Life is a minority stockholder of American Television Communications Corp of Phoenix Arlz which owns Private Channel Club here Through this connection Private Channel Club has access to Home Box Office which is one of the prime cross-country suppliers of cable-TV THE fee to homeowners Is $15 a month Its antenna and decoder installation charge is $50 with a $30 deposit For this a subscriber can view as many as 21 new movies a month aired at staggered times for the convenience of the subscriber's own viewing schedule The package also includes music and comedy concerts not available to regular networks and stations The movies which become available for closed TV use about nine months after they finish their theater bookings Include this month such features as Jaws 2 The Onion Field and Butch and Sundance: The Early Days Ch ON TV service comes to a subscriber for a $1995 monthly fee The installation charge is $3995 with a $30 deposit It books its own films and special programs Its movie offerings this month include The Champ The In-Laws Hot Stuff and The Great Train Robbery PRIVATE Channel signal can reach as far south as 200th Street in Dade and as far north as South Broward Ch ON TV service goes as far south as the upper Keys and north almost to West Palm Beach It also extends to the Bahamas on the east There is some limitation on this closed circuit service for home-owners in Private Channel Club's case Its microwave system of transmission can be blocked by tall and heavy foliage The company has to make a feasibility survey of the home and location of each would-be customer The Club is going into the private home business buttressed by a brisk business servicing multiple-unit dwellings in which it claims it has more than 50000 subscribers Ch ON TV claims to have a subscriber list of more than 15000 and expects shortly to add 3000 more subscribers the home Is located from Ch transmitter in Hallandale in South Broward The station licensed to Oak Communications Inc of San Diego is a typical UHF broadcaster and airs programming in the normal fashion during the day But come nightfall it switches to its closed circuit service ON TV Both companies install a decoder device at each home to receive the programming which comes over the air as a scrambled signal Without the decoder the signal turns up on the home screen as unviewable Private Channel Club and Ch 51 are able to steal the march on cable-TV at least for the time Model AC064B7A 6000 BTU Cool 2 Speed Thermostat EER 70 programs being Cable-TV requires transmission over cable strung along telephone poles or underground and then into subscriber homes And this can take months FIVE COMPANIES are franchised to string Dade with cable So far only two Americable in Homestead and Dynamic Cabievision in Hialeah are in operation Undeniably cable-TV will eventually become the dominant closed circuit system here because once installed it offers a multiple and diverse programming service It has a 33-channel capacity It can relay enhanced signals of ail the area's UHF and VHF TV stations plus those of such distant cities as Chicago and Atlanta It can offer the same special programs that Private Channel Club and ON TV do But in the meantime the latter two companies are expanding their closed circuit programming with the rapidity of a grass fire Private Channel Club gets its movies and other special programs via Time-Life Television which operates the country-wide
