mm mmm' BBflHSI Sunday, Nov. 16, 1980 Santa Cruz Sentlnel-63 Michigan Stifles Purdue's Touted Passing Attack ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) It took a game plan featuring six defensive backs to shut down Purdue quarterback Mark Herrmann, but it worked to perfection for Michigan as the Wolverines powered their way to a 26-0 Big Ten football victory over the Boilermakers Saturday. The victory set up a showdown for the conference championship and a Rose Bowl berth when the Wolverines travel to Columbus for the season finale with Ohio State next Saturday. Immediately after the game, Michigan Athletic Director Don Canham announced that the Wolverines have been assured a berth in the Fiesta Bowl in Tempe, if they, fail to defeat Ohio State.

"The way to sack him is to cover his receivers and have four active kids up front.

We made him around and the coverage was the key. We made him dump the ball." A dejected Herrmann said his chances for winning the Heisman Trophy had probably been dashed after the shutout carried nationally on ABC-TV. "I guess it's pretty much out of reach," Herrmann said. "They shut down everything we threw at them. I have to give Michigan all the credit in the world.

We just couldn't get the stuff rolling today. It was frustrating." Michigan free safety Tony Jackson, a 5-foot-ll junior, picked off a pair of Herrmann's passes in the second quarter one in the end zone where he wrested the ball away from Purdue split end Bart Burrell to thwart a sure Boilermaker touchdown. "When we couldn't scorein the first half, our offense lost its confidence and Michigan's defense built up its confidence," said Purdue Coach Jim Young. "Mark Herrmann played a bad game today but the blame can't all be lodged on him." Shortly after the game, Purdue Athletic Director George King accepted a bid for the Boilermakers to play in the Liberty Bowl in Memphis, on Dec. 27.

The llth-ranked Wolverines, 8-2 on the season, remain undefeated in Big Ten play with a 7-0 conference record. Purdue, ranked 16th in the nation, dipped to 7-3 overall and 6-1 in the conference. Representatives from five bowl games were among the 105,831 spectators at Michigan Stadium and it appeared almost certain that the Boilermakers would receive a postseason bid. In the first quarter, Michigan scored on a 3-yard touchdown by Stanley Edwards and the 22-yard strike from Wangler to Carter. In the fourth quarter, Butch Woolfolk bolted across from the 2-yard line and Wangler and Carter teamed up for their second touchdown.

It was the first time since the 1973 season that the Michigan defense which sacked Herrmann three times and intercepted four of his pass attempts has turned in three successive shutouts. The Wolverines took away Herrmann's long passes, holding him to 129 yards as the heralded 6-foot-5 senior from Carmel, completed 21 of 34 attempts. Wangler completed 12 of 20 for 165 yards and had one interception. Nebraska 35, Iowa St. 0 AMES, Iowa (AP) Jeff Quinn, given excellent field position by a swarming Nebraska defense, ran for two touchdowns and passed for another as the No.

4 Corn-huskers overwhelmed Iowa State 35-0 Saturday in Big Eight Conference football. Nebraska, remaining in contention for the Big Eight title and an Orange Bowl berth, set up three touchdowns by recovering fumbles and the Cornhuskers got another score by pouncing on a fumbled punt in the end zone. The victory lifted Nebraska to 9-1 on the year and 6-0 in the conference heading into next Saturday's showdown with Oklahoma. Iowa State, losing for the fifth straight time, fell to 5-5 and 1-5. Nebraska drove 79 yards in nine plays for a touchdown on the opening series of the game, with Quinn getting the score on a 1-yard sneak with only 3:46 elapsed.

Iowa State then held the potent Cornhuskers in check until Joe Brown fumbled a Nebraska punt late in the first half. Brown bobbled the ball at his own 5-yard line and reserve offensive guard Mike Mandelko fell on io in the end zone for a touchdown, giving the Huskers a 14-0 halftime lead. Nebraska wrapped up the victory with three second-half touchdowns, all after Iowa State fumbles. Iowa State, meanwhile, penetrated Nebraska territory only twice on its first possession of the game, which ended with a punt, and on its final possession, which was stopped by a fumble. Quinn scored on a 1-yard run with 6:09 left in the third quarter and less than three minutes later, hit Tim McCrady with a 22-yard touchdown pass for a 28-0 lead.

Third-string I-back Roger Craig scored the final Nebraska touchdown on a 3-yard run in the fourth quarter, his 15th TD of the year. Nebraska's Jarvis Redwine, the Big Eight's leading rusher, played sparingly. Fullback Andra Franklin led the Huskers with 103 yards in 10 carries. Ohio St. 41, Iowa 7 IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) Quarterback Art Schlichter completed 13 of 18 passes for 195 yards, including two touchdown passes, and led seventh-ranked Ohio State to a 41-7 Big Ten victory over Iowa Saturday.

The triumph, combined with Michigan's 26-0 rout of Purdue, means next week's Buckeye-Michigan clash will once again decide the conference championship and the Big Ten's Rose Bowl entry. Ohio State ran its record to 9-1 overall and 7-0 in the league, while Iowa fell to 3-7 and 3-4. Schlichter's scoring passes a 39-yarder to split end Gary Williams and a 23-yarder to tailback Calvin Murray both came in the first quarter. He only had one pass intercepted. The Buckeyes also capitalized on numerous Iowa turnovers, converting four of them into touchdowns.

They also displayed a powerful ground game, with Murray running for 183 of Ohio State's 293 rushing yards. The Buckeyes' second leading rusher was Tim Spencer, whose 87 yards included touchdown runs of 1 and 2 yards. A 1-yard run by tailback Kelvin Lindsey and two field goals by Vlade Janakievski completed the Ohio State scoring. Iowa scored early in the second half when quarterback Pete Gales connected with split end Keith Chappelle on an 18-yard play. 1980 DATSUN Halchback Coupe with 4-speed, front wheel drive, tachometer, rear window defroster, disc brakes and much more.
