I began with Kalamarakia Tighanite, a Greek mouthful. This is an appetizer with the appearance of encrusted jewelry found in the Aegean Sea. But, dipped in Skordalia sauce (made of walnut paste, garlic and wine), it was grand. Squid is not handsome. They were behind the door when beauty was distributed.

They are not a seafood eaten much in the western world, but they are plentiful and, I was told, sell for 90 cents a pound on the local wharf and 60 cents in Monterey. They are fished, said Schultz, when they move into shallow water to breed I and such breeding you should never have to see. All arms and a million kisses. Well, next came a new taste experience and on new experiences I thrive. Some of the ingredients included fresh ginger, garlic, star anise, beef stock, a cup of Coca Cola, tamarind and something called chili water paste (a tend of water and green hot chilies).

I must say, the flavor is excellent. It is a Schultz original. Brezsny broke away from the Times to sit with me and share these sample dishes. He was saying that squid are living fossils. They range in size from the leggy little darlings on my plate to rumored 60 foot monsters that lurk in the deep.

The next course came with a mild but distinctive flavor. It is called Squid Holy Basil (or Pad Mun Pla Phet) and it is popular in Thailand. All these recipes are therein. Each of these dishes are different from one another and you soon forget those octopus-like mini arms posed in mid-air like in a game of Mother-May-I. Take the hot dish called Tjumi Tjumi (chewy chewy) Taotjo, swimming in hot bean sauce. It is a Szechwan type of squid dish. Makes one bay at the noontime moon.

The two personalities, around which all this business turns, come from different educational molds. Schultz is a UCSC graduate with a degree in theater arts who has chefed here for 10 years. Brezsny, the festival director. (Time magazine had also called earlier will there be no movie perhaps0. musicari has a masters in Russian history.

The Paul Bocuse of squid cooking, who says that 70 percent of the squid is used, walked in with still another version, one of my favorites. It was Squid Provencal, lounged in a sauce of cream, wine, garlic paste, and served with snow peas and tomatoes. This was followed by a Vietnamese entry squid worked with bamboo shoots and Asian mushrooms (said to be hard to find), Mexican coriander called cilantro, and served with a side sauce of peanutbutter and coconut milk. It is called Dragon Squid. This almost went on into the sunset, but when I learned that Newsweek had also competed for their attention.

I was overwhelmed and left. I knew when my squid pro quo was being one-upped. sq.yd. A wide selection of radiant multi-tones and magnificent solid colored saxony plushes! Law To Regulate Solicitations On Mall Suggested To Council SERVICE, SELECTION AND THE RIGHT PRICE THAT'S WHAT RAINBOW CARPETS IS ALL ABOUT! may be used. Use may be conditioned For instance, the city Parks and Recreation Department may require the stand to be used at different locations on different days at different times, or it may limit the number of persons who may be seated or otherwise occupy the stand on behalf of the permittee. The purposes of permit conditions are spelled out in the ordinance Their primary objectives are to minimize mall congestion or obstruction and to provide amply opportunity for others desiring permits for non-commercial stands. Before the ordinance approval, commissioners agreed there should be an expansion of opportunities for these noncommercial stands. Presently there are three mall locations where they may be used: in front of Penniman Title Fortiers Optician, and Woolworth's.

But. a fourth site was designated in front of Bookshop Santa Cruz. Neal Coonerty. bookshop proprietor and a commissioner, said he did not object to a stand being placed there. A new ordinance to regulate the noncommercial use of the Pacific Garden Mall for sales and solicitations was approved by the Pacific Garden Mall Commission Wednesday for recommendation to the Santa Cruz City Council.

The ordinance would replace Ordinance 80-U. which did not survive a court test last year because certain of its provisions were ruled to be insufficiently specific to provide adequate guidelines for the imposition of conditions on permits for the non-commercial use. The new ordinance regulates the time, place and manner of the non-commercial use but does not get into such matters as what is said, content or other issues unrelated to the physical use of the site. Non-commercial purposes include, but are not limited to, religious, political and charitable organizations. The ordinance requires a permit tor placement and use of a stand on the mall The permit must be granted for noncommercial purposes, but the permit may-state the location where the stand shall be used, the days it may be used, the times it Count on second to none custom installation in your home by our own professionals We look forward to serving you Volume buying means lower prices Hundreds of rolls of quality carpeting in stoek Select your favorite!
