91RT state THE SUN Sept. 27, 1979 New sewage leak hits bay SAN FRANCISCO (AP) The pollution assault on San Francisco Bay came from a new direction Wednesday after tons of sewage poured from a source miles away from the massive southern bay spill near San Jose, which continued at a reduced rate. The new spill, in the Suisun Bay tributary, as well as an ocean dumping at nearby Bolinas Lagoon, occurred as the manager of the San Jose treatment plant disputed a state Fish and Game Department estimate that it could take as long as 10 years for south bay wildlife to recover from the threeweek, billion gallon-plus dumping. "The beauty of the bay," plant manager Frank Belick told the San Jose City Council Tuesday, "will be restored" within three months. Region gets energy advisers LOS ANGELES (AP) Creation of an energy advisory committee to the Southwest Border Regional Commission was approved Wednesday by the four state governors who sit on the federal-state agency. The commission also approved a resolution supporting establishment of a new U.S.-Mexico border crossting station at Otay Mesa near San Diego.

The advisory panel created by Arizona Gov. Bruce Babbitt, California Gov. Edmund G. Brown New Mexico Gov. Bruce King and Texas Gov.

William Clements Jr. will seek increased federal funding for energy projects in the Southwest, particularly alternative energy programs. "One of (the area's) particular assets is the energy that exists here the oil, the gas, the lignite, the geothermal, the solar," Brown said. "I would hope that 1 this commission can put some focus on Congress and the President so that federal investments flow in this direction for the benefit of the whole country." 2 VW diesels win approval of state SACRAMENTO (AP) Two 1980 model Volkswagen diesel cars, the Rabbit and the Dasher, have won approval of the California Air Resources Board, it was announced Wednesday. Board spokesman Bill Sessa issued a statement saying that a number of other 1980 model diesels will probably also be approved for sale in California in the next few weeks.

He said the ARB is testing diesel cars from three other manufacturers. Sessa quoted General Motors as saying that by 1985, it expects 25 percent of its production nationwide to be diesel-powered. He said the ARB estimates that at least 40,000 dieselpowered passenger cars will be sold in California next year, with steady sales increases thereafter. ARB Chairwoman Mary Nichols said in the statement, "Diesels are valued for their excellent fuel economy. Our approval shows they also can meet our state's air pollution standards, which are the most stringent in the world." The Volkswagen Rabbit sedan and Dasher sedan and station wagon meet the ARB's emission standards "by a wide margin" and get 40 to 45 miles per gallon in the city, the statement said.

It said a key characteristic of the Volkswagens is a 10-year, warranty for anti smog systems, rather than the usual 5-year, guarantee required by state and federal law. Arthur Hunnicutt dies of cancer at 68 HOLLYWOOD (AP) Arthur Hunnicutt, a character actor best remembered for his country-style roles in the Academy Award-winning movies, "Cat Ballou" and "Harry and Tonto," died Wednesday of cancer at age 68. He died at the Motion Picture and Television Hospital in Woodland Hills where he had been a patient since August 1978, a hospital spokesman said. Born in 1911 in Gravetty, Hunnicutt graduated from Arkansas State Teachers College and made his movie debut in 1942 with a role in "Wildcat." In the 1950s, he appeared in a series of Westerns and Civil War movies, including "Broken Arrow," "The Red Badge of Courage," and "The Big Sky." Specializing in slow- speaking country characters, Hunnicutt established a solid career throughout the '60s and early '70s before he fell ill in 1974. Besides his role as the cat seller in "Harry and Tonto," a story about an old man and a cat that won an Oscar for Art Carney in 1974, Hunnicutt also appeared in "Cat Ballou," a spoof western that won an Oscar for Lee Marvin in 1965.

Hunnicutt, a member of the Screen Actors' Guild and Actors' Equity, is survived by his wife, Pauline, of Los Angeles. Funeral arrangements were pending.
