6:00 KXX 8:30 KECA Move over, Horatio Alger! The rags-to-riches kids you wrote about were okay for their day. But they were make-believe young folks who clambered from the dregs to the tops and I have a real-life young man who makes them look liKe pikers. As you look at Paleface and laugh at Hopes antics and the films funny plotting youll probably murmur to yourself, as many have done, that this is the best Hope fillum youve seen. And flashing across the screen at the opening title credits youll see Robert Welch, Producer. And therein is a story that to these old eyes is one of the greatest success stories of all time.

Pasadena Playhouse has produced lots of success stories over the years, but to our way of thinking the Bob Welch Story is the absolute peak. Just 15 years ago a slim, always smiling, sandy haired Bob was washing windows in the patio cafe at the Playhouse and thereby guaranteeing bread for the basket. He was cutting lawns around town for spending money. All he wanted to do was act. And he was good.

He was a very effective comedian but his voice was "on the weak side and his sandy coloring marie him fade out around the tenth row of a theater. He tried and he tried and for years he just barely kept body and soul together. Then one day he decided to hit for New York and see If he could make the grade. From the Playhouse property department he borrowed an old beat ip suitcase, packed it with his meager belonging and stood at El Molino and Colorado with his thumb outstretched. Along came a fertilizer and gave him a ride to San Bernardino.

That was Bobs exit. Just three years later he came back. He flew in aboard a Rtratoliner and was assistant producer of the Eddie Cantor radio show. Radio and Bob hit it off at once. His uuick wit, a noggin chock with ideas, a big friendly grin and a marriage to a right gal named Templeton Fox sent Rob spinning along in radio.

He was actor-writer-produeer-anything until the Cantor break came. The Story of Bob Yelch goes on and on In radio. The war found him in charge of important phases of Am ted Forces Radio and in a P.F.C. status. No brass for him, just work and a single stripe.

After the war he started back into radio but was sidetracked by Hope into developing film scripts. And it took Paramount a very short time to find out that here was their hoy. Now Sorrowful Jones, Lariat Kid and all the Hope films are his productions. He is one of Paramounts top film makers. And, amazingly enough, hes the same old Roh The same grin, the same sandy thatch.

The only change is around the middle and thats just proof that eating is a nice comfortable procedure. Move over, Horatio Alger! Or at least let my boy Bob in there among your fabulous rags-to-riches kids. KPPC ...1240 KFOX 1280 (Editor'. Th. proRrams below nalo stations.
