Paying Coaches WASHINGTON (AP) The Nike shoe company is paying 17 major-college basketball coaches up to $10000 each to endorse its shoes The Washington Post reported in editions The endorsement campaign is part of aggressive on the basketball shoe market The Post quoted a Nike official The newspaper said that for example University of Maryland Coach Lefty Driesell had a contract that pays him $8000 a year for supporting and assisting the company It said the university switched to Nike shoes this year and was given unlimited free shoes throughout the season Driesell was quoted that his players chose Nike over two other brands that also were offered at no cost Claudia Craig promotions manager for Nike was quoted that $8-000 was above average for the contracts She would not divulge individual contract figures The Post said The NCAA has no restrictions on what products a coach may endorse and an NCAA spokesman said it was up to each individual college or university to make such a Alabama 42-0 the Rattlers gathered under one of the goalposts Coach i Rudy Hubbard spoke briefly and quietly to his players Then they got down on their knees and prayed The players then stood and in voices ever so soft sang the alma mater It is a postgame pattern that has been followed by since arrival five years ago Under Hubbard the Rattlers 7-1 in have won 19 of their last 20 and 39 of 52 with two ties Hubbard explains the reasons for the postgame routine: we do is come together and try to round it all up try to use the game we have played win or lose in terms of the lives we live If you
