1555 call Dost by to on a Cruz Sentinel Friday, April 8, 1977 FOCUS A Prickly Problem For many Americans, spring is a time of blooming flowers after a long cold winter. It's also blossom time in the hot, arid lands of the Southwest, where many species of cactus flourish. In spring, the saguaro, or giant cactus, blooms with flowers on its branches and stems. The saguaro can grow to a height of over 50 feet and its blooms are the state flower of Arizona. Recently, large numbers of Arizona cacti have been stolen by poachers to be sold for landscaping in other areas.

Stolen saguaros have been sold for as much as DO YOU KNOW What is the life science which is concerned with the study of plants? THURSDAY'S ANSWER Morarji Desai is Prime Minister of India. 4-8-77 VEC. Inc. 1977 Win At Bridge By Oswald James Jacoby The late John Crawford, one of the greatest of the greatest players of all time, used to show this hand as an example of how you could tell if a man knew how to play dummy. South wins the heart lead in dummy.

You can't do anything else with a singleton ace. Then declarer should go after diamonds because if he can get four diamond tricks, he doesn't need more than three clubs. And if he can't get four diamonds, he can still hope that clubs will break 3-3. At trick two South plays a dummy's ace of diamonds, and here is where the key play comes in. He must drop either the eight or the nine.

If he drops the four he is not only not a firstrate player but he has also lost his contract. After dropping the nine, he leads a low diamond and sticks in the eight. If West takes that diamond, South has a tenance over West's remaining honor. So an alert West may refuse to win that trick. In describing her research at the Stanford school of medicine, O'Brien said she is particularly interested in the effect of anesthetic agents on alveolar macrophages, which are defense cells that protect the lung against infection by engulfing foreign particles.

Aesthetics may alter the function in the immediate postoperative period. To understand this and other consequences of anesthesia, O'Brien is studying the reversibility of the anesthetic effect, the time required for cell lines to recover normal function after exposure to anesthesia. The grant is from the lung association's research and medical education fund, which in 1976 raised a total of $213,000 through sale of Christmas Seals. In other matters, the council unanimously approved a two-lot subdivision requested by Gene Dodrill for land on Scotts Valley Drive between the Lost Word and Redwood Nursery in a C-4-D zone (commercial, design review required). In another unanimous move, the council amended its ordinance creating a planning commission from stating it will be a sevenmember board to a five-member board. The number was reduced since the council has created a design review board. In a separate vote, the council unanimously decided to make the design review board a three-member board with the Community Development Director in an advisory capacity. The Community Development Director used to be considered a member of this board.

The council also was presented with three letters, all concerned with sewer hook up requests that had been denied. The council refused to consider requests by Ben Hatten and Ken Burke, but did decide to give allocation to three parcels on McCloud Way once an inadequate line is replaced. The properties are owned by Norton, Former City Building Inspector Jack Williams and Cecil Miller. Norton explained to the council that a condition of the lot split had been that dwellings be hooked up to the sewer, and one existing dwelling was hooked up. The city discovered that a line that had been okayed by the former building inspector was inadequate and put a stop on the other connections, the city manager reported.

The council agreed to allow the sewer hookups as long as a new line was installed and after the city tested the line, Hale added. Will Speak Meeting day at 11:30 a.m. in the San Jose Hyatt House.
