The Sacramento Bee 1 OBITUARIES Thursday December 9 1999 B7 Music exec helped build Tower Records Anthony Valerio He dealt with many entertainers including Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin John Archer Longtime radio personality was one of the many voices of the famous program John Archer one of the many radio announcers who intoned the indelible radio introduction of crime drama and also appeared in one of the first science fiction films has died He was 84 Mr Archer announced weekly for several months in 1944 and 1945 His voice was also heard on ra- FBI in Peace and and a daily soap opera called of Honeymoon In 1950 he had the leading role in the pioneering science fiction film By Steve Gibson Bee Staff Writer Anthony Valerio a Tow-er Records executive who helped build the company into an international business with annual revenues of about $1 billion died Dec 1 in his Sacramento home of cancer He was 81 Mr title at Tower was vice president for administration a post he held for 27 years For more than two decades beforejoining Tower he ran Melody Sales a San Francisco-based record distribution company whose labels included Mercury Electra Coral and Cadence His role in the San Francisco company brought him into frequent contact with entertainers such as Frankie Laine Louis Armstrong Frank Sinatra Dean Martin Bill Cosby Sammy Davis Jr and Michael Bolton whose photos with Mr attended a seminary St in Menlo Park during his junior high and high school years according to his son Toby Valerio of Foster City Mr Valerio served as an Army officer helping organize entertainment for troops during World War II his son said Immediately before and after the war he worked as a master of ceremonies at dances in the Bay Area establishing important connections in the music business his son said In 1946 with the late A1 Bramy he became a record distributor in San Francisco starting Melody Sales Both in San Francisco and in Sacramento Mr Valerio was an avid golfer and sports fan who enjoyed attending 49ers Giants and Kings games Solomon said He rarely missed a Sacramento Kings game For the past 17 years he was a key organizer of what became known as the Tony Valerio Tower Golf Classic played at Del Paso Country Club Solomon said Proceeds from the tourney go to charity mostly food closets He was married for 50 years to Louise Calloway Valerio who died in 1997 In addition to his son he is survived by a daughter Denise Valerio of Dublin A funeral Mass is scheduled for noon today at St Ignatius Catholic Church 3235 Arden Way Sacramento immediately following the received his commission as a 2nd Lt and was married to Virginia Benner Max's World War il service was primarily at weather bases In Anchorage Alaska and the Aleutian Islands In 1945 he was released from the Service with the rank of Captain In 1944 an accumulation of Max's educational credits earned him a of A degree from BYU He and Vir- finia settled down near outh Pasadena both working at several iobs while Max attended and graduated from a one-year TV Technical School They soon started adding three sons and a daughter to their busy lives which always included serving in various church positions Little League baseball and PTa Max worked in and owned several TV service businesses In the process they moved to Brigham City Utah where they lived from 1953 to 1959 While there he also began working for the US Civil Services at Hill AFB Ogden Utah From there his Civil Service agency (telephone electronics) was transferred to McClellan AFB Sacramento California in 1959 at which time he discontinued the TV service work The family lived In Sacramento for 12-12 years until Max was transferred to Griffin AFB Rome New York After six years there Max retired from Civil Service The family returned to Sacramento where for several years he and Virginia managed a motel then a 112-unit apartment building before moving to their current home where they have been for 21 years 35 years total as Sacramento residents Max then worked for Es-katon (a firm dealing with elderly care) aT their headquarters office for nearly ten years as Maintenance Supervisor He was an avid gardener and when In good health there was nothing he could not work at andor repair as needed He had exceptional mechanical-electronic skills and was also a very good home cook He leaves his loved family wife Virginia sons Greg Gary and wife Laurie Dennis and wife Londa daughter Deanna three brothers Wells Bert Mel and their wives his brother-in-laws Neil Benner Loren Libby and their wives 22 dear
