They were aware of an ordinance that fines property owners up to $1,000 for failing to shovel sidewalks within six hours of a storm's end. City hall workers obey the ordinance with help from a sidewalk-size, front-end loader. Even with the vehicle, Friday's soggy snow presented problems.

"It's like moving concrete," Thomas Spishock said while refueling the loader. Heavy snow also taxed trucks plowing the streets. Andrew Benyo parked four the 11 trucks in the fleet of Hazle Township, where he is Card Of Thanks HENRY C. at the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to Most Precious Blood Parish Outreach Program. roadmaster, because those trucks were too light for Friday's chore. Benyo and William Gentilesco, who oversees plowing in Hazleton, both said snow was heavy enough to trip back blades, a safety feature that prevents damage to the trucks. Trucks showed the strain another way, too, Gentilesco said.

Diesel fuel use increased. Old pros help out when the going 8 gets tough When the weather turned weird, the Hazleton Highway Department turned to old pros. Three retirees hopped behind the steering wheel to help plow snow and spread cinders on city streets. "They seem to enjoy it (and seeing) their old friends from when they worked here," department supervisor William Gentilesco said of the retirees, Adam Scarcella, Louis Onore and Anthony "Butch" Sebia. The department also got help from another fellow with some heavy machine operation on his resume Mayor Michael Marsicano.

(Continued from page 1) The other appointment will be to the Greater Hazleton Area Sewer Authority. As of Friday night members of the council majority had not declared any nominees for the sewer authority position. But both members of the council minority are nominating different people. Ripa will toss Neil Craig, 79, of 736 E. Diamond to council.

Craig, who was a sewer authority member for five years in the 1970's is a retired strip mine worker and is current president of the 14th Ward Fire Company. Craig was not aware he was nominated when contacted Friday. Ripa's ally on council, James Ferry will nominate Fred Barletta 65, of 76 Harding Street, former general manager of Barletta Corporation and president of Edgewood in the Pines. Barletta served on the sewer authority in the 1980's and, for a time, was its president. He was also on the school board.

Since Barletta is the uncle to city councilman Louis Barletta, Louis Barletta said he would likely abstain from that vote, and has not made up his mind on whether he would approve Craig's nomination. The mayor has sole authority to appoint members of the housing authority and the planning commission. City council members may accept or reject the mayor's nomination, but cannot make their own nomination to those boards. A survey of council suggests that Marsicano's picks will be approved with little opposition. Marsicano has offered Thomas Hornak, 67, of 607 Pardee a quality assurance inspector for the Department of Defense, to fill a vacancy on the Hazleton Housing Authority.

Hornak has also served as city treasurer, and a member of HCA and the city parking authority. For a vacancy on the planning commission, Marsicano has nominated Gilbert V. Degenhart, 69, of 710 Samuels a retired letter carrier. Falwell (Continued from page 1) Falwell, the chancellor of Liberty University in Lynchburg and founder of the now-defunct Moral Majority, said Friday i in Williamsburg that he did not intend for his statement to be anti-Jewish. He said he meant only that the Antichrist must be Jewish because Jesus Christ was a Jew.

"If he's going to be the counterfeit of Christ, he has to be Jewish," Falwell said. "The only thing we know is he must be male and Jewish." Rabbi James Rudin, the director of inter-religious affairs for the American Jewish Committee in New York, said the comment surprised him because he knows Falwell is a strong supporter of Israel and is not anti-Jewish. Editor (Continued from page 1) On the advice of his attorney, Lundberg, 65, would not comment. Lundberg had been editor of JAMA for 17 years. The distinguished journal, circulation 700,000, is considered one of the "twin peaks" of American medical literature, along with the New England Journal of Medicine.

Anderson said the firing had nothing to do with the scientific merits of the article and instead involved the rush to get it into print. Anderson said Lundberg "was focused on sensationalism, not journalism," and he apologized for the article's timing. White House spokesman Joe Lockhart said of the firing: "I think that clearly is an internal matter for the AMA to deal with. And I think they're in the best position to decide what's appropriate." Some longtime observers of medicine criticized the firing and said good journals often speed publication of articles relevant to public health or public debate. "I think this is a tragedy, since George Lundberg is a giant in the field of American medical publishing, and under his leadership, the journal flourished," said Arthur Caplan, director of bioethics at the University of Pennsylvania.

June M. Reinisch, co-author of the article in the Jan. 20 issue of JAMA, said she was "absolutely shocked" by the firing. Reinisch, retired director of the Kinsey Institute for Research in Sex, Gender and Reproduction, said there was nothing unusual about JAMA's handling of the article..
