Ol'H CAM OlDATfi FOR COIOBKI9. The National Uuion Convention which met at Wabster City Inst week, placed in nomination for the office of Conpresanan for the 6th district, Maj. J. D. THOMPSON, of Eldora, Hardin county, and we take pleasure in placing his name at the head of our columns, and pledging to him and the principles he represents, our unqualified support, in opposition to the Indiana nominee of the radical disunionists.

Maj. Thompson is a lawyer of erable note in the of the State in which he resides and ia a man of very marked ability. When the war brcke of staying at home and whining copperhead and "traitor," aid picking up odd jobs in the way of contracts for himself and friends, as can truthfully be said of bis non-resident promptly volunteered in fense of his country, and was amongst the first to join the army of the Union from the S'ate of Iowa. went out as a Captain in the 1st Iowa Cavalry, and participated in all the engagements which won for that regiment so enviable a reputation. Shortly after the regiment entered active service, Mr.

Thompson, ae a reward for gallant and meritorious conduct, was promoted to the rank of Mnjor, which position he held ontil he was mustered out of the service. We hope Maj. THE JUDICIAL CANDIDATE. We take pleasure in announcing as the candidates of the Democratic Judicial Convention of the 4 district, the names of 0.

C. TREDWAT, Judge, and of this city, for P. D. MICKLE, for Die- tnct Attorney. The candidate forjudge has for many years been a resident of this city, and a successful practitioner at the bar in this and adjoining counties.

As a well read lawyer, and who thoroughly understands the practice, no man in the district stands higher. He posxesses every requisite for making an able and competent Judge, and should he le elected will without doubt dispose of the which may come him with fairness and dispatch. The candidate for District Attorney is a lawyer of several years practice. He resides in Harrison county, and though located there but a short time, has already secured the reputation of being first elesa lawyer, and a man of the highest happy contrast from his It is to be hoped that the people of the district will consult their own best interest in the matter of voting for judicial officprs, and tlect to the two positions of Judge and District Attorney these candidates so eminently qualified for the posit ioM for which bated. fr APPOINT BO.

It gives us pleasure to announes the Appointment of Gen. Thomas H. Benton to the position of Assessor of Internal Revenue for this District. Gen. Benton is one of Iowa's bravest soldiers is a man of unblemished public and private character is an able advocate of the policy of -President Johnson and the principles enunciated by the Philadelphia Convention, and his appointment ia another encouraging evidence that the Administration is determined to strengthen the hands of those who defend it from the uttacks of the disunion Tbe General will doubtless soon fill the of Deputy Assessors with men political sentiments are in accord wtik liia own.

Fur the last the of political power has been hell ny ti soldiers. Without tbe assurance of their support hardly any candidate dare I take tbe field, and without it none It any confidence of success. That to it was mainly attributable during all tlmt time the almost universal success of the cats cannot be questioned but this while the army was in the field, and under the sole influence of tbe party which controlled its votes.

Absent from the scenes of political 4trifo, and hence ignorant of tbe wiles and artifices by which the party in power beguiled the soldier and sailor of bis judgment warped by the dissemination auiong tbem of radical journals, filled with vile deuuuciatioos of the loyal men of the country the Democrats. Now, however, tbe status of this noble class, to whom we are indebted for our country's preservation is changed now they are in a tion where they can form a dispassionate aud correct estimate of the amount of credit to which that venal press is entitled which baa ao often and so long deceived and mitdead them now they are at home mingling with their fellow citizens ib tbe civil walks of life, observaut of the practical workings and manifest purposes of the party to which they for years hud been voting now that they can see that all the noble sacrifices which tuey have made for the preservation and restoration of thn'r country are worse than nseless, should the theory of tiie radicals ai tJ the of victories which tiiev have ac- contplUhed, be carried have determined to cut loose from a party whose teachings tend only to the prevention of the restoration of the Union, and to take their stand upon the broad stitutional platform adopted at the great National Convention at Philadelphia. Thus, it will be observed, that the true men and the loyal men throughout the breadth and length of the land, are rap Hit sloughing off from that rotten organ isation which had but one that object tbe personal agrwndizementof its members.
