Joseph Varon defended Panasuk Pollack and others have been named as unindicted co-conspirators in the same drug investigation that led to indictment POLLACK SAID HE often felt It was he not Panasuk who was on trial and much of the testimony seemed to support that feeling It often focused as much on Pollack as on Panasuk are times I wish I was in Tehran" Pollack muttered Thursday The nonjury trial before US District Judge Edward Davis ended late Thursday after the government produced a string of witnesses to rebut testimony A verdict is expected to be announced next week Among the government witnesses was Detective Richard Jennings of the Dade Public Safety Department who said he and federal agents interviewed Sipes several times Her version of the incident in office matched he said Two Internal Revenue Service agents said Sipes told them essentially the same thing that Pollack put a gun in her mouth and threats ened to kill her on the spot But one agent said Sipes told him Levitt had put a gun to her head as well SIPES ALSO told them that Pollack or someone In his office once instructed her to tell a federal grand jury In Kentucky she was a junkie that she was on dope and that she did not remember about any narcotics deals Jennings said Asked about that Sipes testified that Pollack had told her only to tell the truth to the grand jury Prosecutor Hanna contended that Sipes was a victim a systematic intimidation of on the part of Pollack and others Sipes made a point of telling Davis that has intimidated Stone Cites Hispanic Census Mailing in Adiee Spanish By MARY VOBORIL- Htrald Staff Wrltar A Coral Gables woman testified Thursday that defense attorney Paul Pollack laid one finger on me" much less slapped her around placed a gun barrel In her mouth or sought to have her killed Isabel Salazar testimony was in stark contrast to that of Mark Levitt a key government witness in the cocaine trial of William (Billy) Panasuk owner of Speedy Bail Bonds Sipes had threatened to expose the alleged interstate drug dealing of Panasuk and Pollack Levitt said In office across from the Orange Bowl Pollack slapped Sipes flung her to the floor shoved a gun in her mouth and me if I wanted to waste her for five Levitt had testified But Sipes said Pollack treated me with anything but the utmost' respect and Sipes who described herself as very strong heroin from 1975 through 1977 said it was Levitt who put a gun in her mouth A THE CONFLICTING testimony came near the end of what normally would have been a routine drug trial in US 'District Court this week Elements of the routine were dis- posed of at the outset The government accused Pollack of saying witnesses in this case should be then walking up to Levitt and calling him dead Some testimony and frequent statements by government attorney Ed Hanna had Pollack closely tied to alleged drug trafficking which Pollack denies Metro Capt Charles Black was accused of carrying a briefcase loaded with cocaine out of office And the three supposedly had a standing lunch date with the late Paul Baker By CHERYL BROWNSTEIN i Htrald Staff Wriftr Sen Richard Stone (D Fla) has asked the director '-of the US Census Bureau to approve the mailing of census questionnaires to Spanish-speaking households in Dade County find it disturbing that even though your own Hispanic Advisory committee recommended the mailing of Spanish forms to Hispanic neighborhoods this recommendation was Stone said in a letter to census chief Vincent Barabba go to the trouble and expense to organize the advisory committee if its recommendation is Stone joined public officials in Dade and spokesmen for minority groups across the country in criticizing the Census refusal to mail the Span-ish-language forms THE CENSUS Bureau says it will provide a Spanish form to anyone who requests one after the initial English-language mailing But critics say that the refusal to mail the questionnaires in Spanish will result in an undercount According to Jean Parvin an assistant to Stone an accurate census count is vital to determine the federal funding formula for different areas The census figures are also used to decide reapportionment for congressional seats Stone said in the letter that Florida was undercounted in the last census in 1970 and a failure by the bureau to act could the misrepresentation of Dade and other demographics the extension of the Voting Rights Act of 1964 government officials usually mail bilingual sample ballots to voters and I recommend the Census Bureau use the same criteria to mail the census Stone said Census Bureau officials in Washington have said that if they were to mail out the census forms in Spanish they would then be obliged to send them out also in other languages including German Polish or Chinese 61-18 Legal Hoheei Department of Treasury Internal Revenue Service Public Auction Sait Under the authority in Internal Revenue Code section 6331 the property
