second time during the final caution period to top off their fuel supplies The strategy cost track position for the restart on Lap 161 of the race's 200 laps but it enabled the two to go the distance while rivals In front of them had to stop Waltrip won and Gant finished second Turning point The crash on Lap 150 that eliminated the Ford of Davey Allison who had led 1 15 laps Worth mentioning: Waltrip became only the third driver to win four Winston Cup races at Pocono joining Bill Elliott and Tim Richmond Quote of the race: "I don't know how those guys went 41 laps on a tank of fuel I thought you only got that kind of mileage with a Toyota or one of those other foreign cars" Ricky Rudd who had to stop for enough fuel to finish on Lap 181 and wound up in fourth place By TOM HIGGINS Staff Writer LONG POND Pa For the fourth time this season team owner Robert Yates crew chief Larry McReynolds and members of their Charlotte-based racing operation watched Sunday as driver Davey Allison rode through a savage crash This one in the Miller 500 occurred as Allison attempted to drive back to the front in a NASCAR Winston Cup race he'd dominated It was the worst of all It exceeded even the violent wreck Allison experienced May 16 at Charlotte Motor Speedway just after taking the checkered flag in The Winston all-star race After being tapped by winner Darrell Waltrip's Chevrolet Allison's Ford slid sideways and then sailed into the air rolling 1 1 times and slamming down a shattered hulk just off the 25-mile Tunnel Turn rated by many drivers as trickiest "NASCAR needs to take 100 horsepower out of these cars" said Yates who later learned Allison broke his right collarbone both bones in the right forearm and his right wrist and bruised his right eye socket "One of these days a car is going to get airborne go in a grandstand and all of us are going to be out of business" Allison set track speed records in leading 115 of the 150 laps before the accident was undergoing surgery for the broken wrist at 7:30 pm at Lehigh Valley Hospital in nearby Allentown He was listed in stable condition It was too early to determine his status for the Diellard 500 next Sunday at his home track Talladega (Ala) Superspeedway where he won the Winston 500 in May The Allentown hospital is where dad NASCAR legend Bobby Allison fought for his life and spent weeks recovering from injuries suffered In a crash entering the Tunnel Turn in June 1988 That accident probably ended the elder Allison's driving career in which he posted 84 victories Said McReynolds: "Before the helicopter took Davey to the hospital he was very alert and thankful for that He knew where he was knew he had been racing and knew what was going on "I know how many licks like this our little driver can take I hope this is all of them for the rest of the year" Allison also crashed in April in the Food City 500 at Bristol pterin) Raceway and the Hanes 500 at Martinsville (Va) Speedway Even so he missed a race and had led the point standings since taking the season-opening Daytona 500 rolling to four victories along the way After starting Sunday from the pole he appeared headed for a fifth win and speculation was increasing that he would become the first driver in NASCAR history to lead the standings through an entire season wreck ended that possibility as Bill Elliott took the top spot in the standings toward the $1 million Winston Cup title defending the national title it won last year Motorsports Veteran late model sportsman driver Freddie Queiy of Kannapolis won the 60-lap feature race in Saturday night racing at Concord Motor Speedway In the 50-lap late model stock event Terry Brooks finished ahead of his brother Scott Brooks Danny Jones won the super stock feature and Mike Trivette took the street stock finale Dennis Rinehardt of Salisbury won his first super pro title of the season Saturday at Rockingham Dragway defeating Rusty Greer of Florence SC in the final In the modified class Greer defeated Philip Hunter of Florence SC Tony Boone of Wadesboro won the trophystreet category while the motorcycle class was won by Steve Farris of Easley SC Penn Crim Jr of Belews Creek won late model stock race at Caraway Speedway in Asheboro In the limited stock event Jeff McLaurin of Siler City finished ahead of Kim Shaw of Asheboro Observer Staff and Newa Bervicaa John come in that second time under yellow and get gas" said team ownerdriver Waltrip crediting the call to crew chief Jeff Hammond "It surprised me that the other guys too That old nemesis called track position got them They wanted to keep it and hope for another caution period that'd allow them to stop for the fuel they needed" The race stayed "green" and that played to the advantage of Waltrip and Gant who nursed 1025 miles from their fuel supplies "The engine run out about half-blown the car is wore out and the driver wants to go home" said Waltrip who averaged 134058 mph "It was close sure the car took on a full tank in postrace inspection" However Hammond said about a gallon of gas was left enough for two more laps Said Gant: "I just get off the corners as well as Darrell did in the last 10 laps I worried about the mileage 1 was worried about catching Kulwicki finished third followed by Rudd and Musgrave who had his best Winston Cup showing Placing sixth through 10th: Martin last July when I turned over like that at Daytona in the Pepsi 400" It required 10 laps under caution for the track crew to clean up wreckage All the front-runners pitted the first lap after the yellow flag showed Waltrip and Gant stopped a second time on Lap 159 to top off their fuel tanks and that strategy proved pivotal Kulwicki who led 58 laps in a Ford was in front from the restart until
