Olympics SportsIC 10C-13C calendar By STEVE WISEMAN Staff Writer GASTONIA Pep Harris couldn't wipe the smile off his face Neither could his opponent There they were two combatants in a South Atlantic League baseball game in June in Columbus Ga Harris on the mound for Columbus Mark Anthony in the box for Charleston SC Just two summers earlier they were teammates at Lancaster High when the Bruins finished second in the SC 4A playoffs Now they met again as professionals each wanting offseason bragging rights "I was smiling and laughing and so was he" Harris' said Harris won the battle striking Anthony out But it take that situation to make happy always happy when on the baseball' field Monday when the Columbus team bus pulled into Gastonia Harris was a little more excited a little more positive When he pitched against the Gastonia Rangers that night at Sims Legion Park six members of his family and his girlfriend were at the park to watch Harris pitched five innings giving up four hits and one run but he get the decision in the 5-4 win But it was the first time in a year pitched in front of them "It gives me a lot of confidence" Harris said not often you pitch in front of your family in the minor The way Harris is pitching he has a lot of confidence anyway His seven wins are third-best on the Columbus staff Carlos Crawford a former star at South Mecklenburg High and roommate this season is top6 on the team with nine wins In June the Redstixx won the first-half championship with Harris winning the pennant-clinching game a 5-3 victory over the Albany (Ga) Polecats nothing new for Harris: In May 1991 he pitched a two-hit shutout and struck out 11 for Lancaster High to clinch the state championship against Lexington Harris says the biggest difference now is that he decides what pitch to throw At Lancaster coach A1 Berry called the pitches from the dugout Columbus pitching coach Fred Gladding is trying to get Harris to rely on his fastball more At Lancaster Harris used his sharp-breaking curveball to mow down hitters Harris is struggling somewhat with his control In 86 innings this year walked 47 batters In his senior season at Lancaster he pitched 89H innings and walked only 22 "In high school you can throw (the curveball) all the Gladding said you do Gladding says Harris has a superior curveball but needs to get more velocity on his fastball if he wants to progress toward the majors And Gladding says only one way to do that got to throw the ball to make your arm strong" Gladding said got to get him to throw fastballs" Harris has only played one year of professional baseball He still has two other levels Class AA and Class AAA to go through before reaching the major leagues He knows from advice he got at Lancaster High from Berry and pitching coach Steve Williams that he has to stay positive always told me to stay Harris said If you get negative in any way you can get hurt" really in no hurry four years sure like to be playing at Triple-A or the majors" Harris said really I just want to play pro baseball" Television today MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL Chicago Cube at New York Mets (WGN) 1 pm Chicago Cube at New York Mets (WWOR) 1:30 pm Atlanta Knoxville (1658) So far 272554 people have attended games at Knights Castle Last year the club set an attendance record of 315791 To set another record this year Charlotte would have to average 3603 over the last 12 home dates Given the attendance this year and the fact that the Knights have a shot at the playoffs that seems destined to happen Jacksonville Charlotte stood 20-17 in the second half That puts the Knights in second place six games back of Greenville in the second-half standings Charlotte can make the playoffs by winning the second half but the Knights have catch Greenville to make the playoffs If Greenville wins the second half as well then the team with the second-best overall record (both halves combined) keeps playing In the first half Charlotte finished in third place Vi games behind Jacksonville So all the Knights have to do is finish two games ahead of Jacksonville in the second half to have a better overall record Through games the Knights were 1 Vi games ahead of Jacksonville The teams met Saturday night and play again today at 5:30 pm at Jacksonville They finish the season with three games at Knights Castle Sept 3-5 New attendance record? average of 4867 fans Thirty-three days from today the Southern League regular season comes to a close Will it be the end of season ushering the Knights into Class AAA? Or will the Knights qualify for the postseason and extend the fun just a little bit longer?
