6B THE CHARLOTTE OBSERVER Monday May 25 1 992 MOTORSPORTS Bad brakes crash stop King at Charlotte NOTEBOOK PETTY DIARY Richard Petty ran the Coca-Cola 600 for the last time Sunday and judging only from the results it wasn't unlike a lot of them in recent years He finished 41st and was several laps off the pace when a wreck ended his day It was a different performance however as he discussed in a conversation with sports editor Leonard Laye 1 was telling Benny Parsons the other day that I still try to come out of the car smiling after a disappointing finish just to keep from crying I did the same thing Sunday and that was pretty much the way I felt This the way I wanted the deal to go in any race much less my last 600 If had a good day if nothing had gone wrong the car would have been capable of winning the race And it's been a good while since I've been able to say that The car was flying I thought we got off to a good start (moving from 12th to eighth and running with the top contenders in the early stages) But when I turned into the (third) corner (on lap 15) I didn't have brakes You use brakes very much at all at Charlotte but the left rear locked up and that changed everything for us It led to two more accidents and the last one put us out Before that run way behind everybody all the time to leave some room to slow down But every time I touched the brakes it locked up And when somebody would get on their brakes in a hurry run out of room to get slowed down That was what happened when Mark Martin spun Everybody got on the brakes and I hit Hut (Stricklin) They stopped too quick that time just have to keep on going and hope we keep running good If we do maybe something will happen before the season is over The last 600 well any time you run good it just their fists to sky' hooting and hollering high-fiving and hugging like crazy Then they ran out ta car which screeched to a brief stop then roared off for victory circle In minutes Earnhardt was surrounded by sponsors track officials TV cameras and photographers He waved grinned and mugged for photos wearing a series of caps with corporate logos Crew cuts up But the real celebration was going on behind the backdrop where crew had gathered and was holding the most raucous party anyone ever had while guzzling nothing but' Gatorade and Coke been a little bit behind" said gas man Chocolate
