was known for his wit compassion and dedication died Tuesday of complications from back surgery He was 69 Dr Whitney also suffered from heart problems pulmonary fibrosis and a pre-existing immune deficiency one of his sons Todd Whitney said Thursday Dr Whitney practiced medicine in Sacramento for nearly four decades starting in 1959 He left private practice in 1993 and went to work for Planned Parenthood as associate medical director a post he held until late 1997 Bill Sandberg executive director of the Sacramento-El Dorado Medical Society called him "a good role model for medicine" Dr Whitney was chairman of the society's medical legal committee for 14 years Sandberg said "and he did just a stellar job" Born April 13 1928 in Indianapolis Dr Whitney was the only child of Mary Alice Johnson a homemaker and Clinton Whitney an Internal Revenue Service agent He earned an undergraduate degree from Purdue University in 1948 and his medical degree from Northwestern University in 1952 He did his medical internship at Highland Alameda County Hospital in Oakland and his obstetricsgynecology residency at the University of California hospital in San Francisco Dr Whitney served as an Army medical officer from 1953-55 In Sacramento he had an obstetricsgynecology practice from 1959 to 1988 when he began specializing in gynecology only "He was just a wonderful man always there for his patients" recalled Judie Waters a former patient "Words can't describe how great he was" In addition to his son Todd of Sacramento survivors include his wife of 39 years Joyce Pifer Whitney sons Kim Whitney of Roseville and Scot A Whitney of Carmichael a daughter Andrea Whitney of Carmichael and three grandchildren There will be a memorial service at 7 pm Monday at Seventh-day Adventist briefly for the NFL's Detroit Lions Oakland Raiders New York Jets and Washington Redskins After playing in the NFL he signed as a defensive end for the Oakland Invaders of the old US Football League Later he worked as an assistant football coach at Sacramento and Florin high schools and coached the South Sacramento Vikings youth football team A native of Oklahoma City he was the son of Frances attended the University of North Dakota at 15 the youngest in her class She transferred to UCLA in her junior year and received her BA in 1926 She met Gunner Gramatky and they were married In 1933 In 1950 the family moved to Sacramento In 1953 Mrs Gramatky became a founding member of the Sutter Hospital Auxiliary In her more than forty years of enthusiastic service she chaired the Junior volunteers end the Oncology Service She served as Auxiliary president three times and as editor of the Auxiliary's award-winning Paper the Sunray She pioneered and ran the pediatric orientation
