Personal Property Tax Notice. It is estimated that Andrew Carnegie has given away 100,000,001) for library purposes. He might do worse, considering' his great wealth. Some people seem determined to stir up sectional animosity between the north and south. Cut it out.

If you cant live in peace in thiscountry go over to Turkey or Russia or down in South America. With the saloons all abolishing the free lunch counters in some of the large cities, the bar-room politicians will soon be in a bad way. The only thing for them to fall back on are the temperance soup houses. A French Count who has arrived in New York thinks he can give aristocratic society something to think about. Any old scate with a handle to his name can create an excitement in the American smart set." 1 1 is estimated that 1,000,000 immigrants will reach this country during the present fiscal year and it is safe to say that a majority of them aro the scum of Europe at least such is the record of past immigration.

Unless Congress passes some law that will effectually restrict this class, this country will soon be in a bad way. One occasionally hears a person express satisfaction because a cattle trust is about to be or has been formed to light the packers of the meat trust, but the chances are that their jubilant spirits will last only for a short period. M(QI AII, Assessor Sutler Cal. MAKE THE FARM HOME ATTRACTIVE. In almost (ivory of this State, as well as in the middle west, farmers are facing a serious proposition of a scarcity of help in the cultivating and harvesting of their crops. Notwithstanding the advertisements run in the city dailies asking for farm laborers, the demand far exceeds the supply. Men who are idle in the city seem to have no desire to go out on the farm to work and the majority of the people lose sight of the principal reason for this state of affairs.

The fault, to a great extent, lies with the farms and the farmers. In California, especially, the surroundings on the farm are anything but even for the boys who are raised on it, much less a hired man. There seems to be something lacking about the majority of the rural homes that is capable of holding the young men and making them contented. As a rule, as soon as a farmers son attains his majority the first move ho makes is to rush to the cities, where, he imagines, money is plentiful and a gay life awaits him. This reduces the force on the farms and in itself prevents men from the overcrowed cities seeking homes in; the country.

It is hardly to be expected that men from the cities vvilj take kindly to farm life when young men who have been reared as farmers rush olf to the cities as soon as they I are allowed to shift for themselves, We believe the remedy lies with the farmers themselves. Let us i make the home life desirable for our I young men. Encourage them in their work and oiler them every in- dueement possible. The labor of Rj son is far more profitable to the sire than the labor of the ordinary hired, man and men less experienced. Make it possible for our young men to have a better opportunity of making a name by remaining at home and using industry and thrift than they have in rushing oil' to the city I and becoming a nonentity in a place; where there are ten applicants for every position who are just as well qualified for the place, if not better, than the deluded young rancher.

Denier in all kinds of country produce Personal Property. WHERE WOULD THEY PUT THE SAND? It is the opinion of Engineer Nurse of the Hoard of Public Works if the dredging of Chain island at the mouth of the San Joaquin and Sacramento rivers pays for itself in gold bearing sand that the solution of the river problem will be made and that companies would then be formed to scoop out all the river beds coutaining min- ing debris? Whether it will pay for the work-can only be ascertained by trial, but where will the dredgers put the dirt. Great mountains have been washed into our river beds and wo would not! attempt to guess the size of the pile of earth it would make wero it all collected in one heap but certainly if mountains have been washed away by the hydraulicers there must -bo mountains in the streams and on I adjacent lands. Just think of what an immense bank of it would be. Between Marysville and Sacramento there is sand enough to make a minature range of mountains on each side of the Feather and Sacramento rivers.

We believe the dredging scheme would pay and we hope Mr. with his engineering ability will provide a means of taking care of the slickens after it has been lifted out of the river beds but to us it appears an impossibility.
