Sports Digest- Football While Darrell Royal resigned from his head coaching post at Texas and Frank Broyles did the same at Arkansas this weekend, Miami, Fla. coach Carl Selmer was fired from his coaching post and two other schools replaced recently fired coaches. Jim Young football coach at Arizona for the past four seasons, was announced as Purdue's new head coach replacing recently removed coach Alex Agase, and Gary Moeller, Michigan's defensive coordinator for the past eight years, was named to replace Bob Blackman os head coach of Illinois. Two other coaches turned down prospective offers over the weekend as Lou Holtz, coach of the NFL's New York Jets, said he would not return to college coaching and Steve Sloan of Texas Tech reportedly turned down an offer from the Atlanta Falcons.

Los Angeles Rams defensive tackle Merlin Olsen said that he will retire at the end of this season, his 15th. The Seattle Seahawks claimed Bryant Salter on waivers from the Miami Dolphins. Second year New England Patriots quarterback Steve Grogan, from Kansas State, tied the NFL record for quarterbacks rushing for touchdowns, with his 10th and 11th scoring runs of the season Sunday against the New Orleans Saints.
