Her physician, Dr. Lee Siegel, said only "she's at a nice, quiet place" and wasn't ready yet to talk about, what hit her in her apartment September 6. Police 'nves-tigators said the injury apparently was caused when a 40-pound hair, drier fell on the actress' head.

L. F. Jane Wyman Just Small Town Girl at Heart Apparently Jane Wyman, Warner Bros, star, is just a small town gal at heart! Recently, while making exterior location scenes for "Johnny Belinda" at Fort Bragg, a small town in Northern California, Miss Wyman, in her homespun picture costumes, mingled so freely with the townfolk that a group of women invited her to attend a baby christening at one of the local churches. Miss Wyman surprised her colleagues by going to the doin's. Then she surprised herself by getting right down into the spirit of the thing.

Since signing his contract with Warner Bros, some five or six years ago, this former college and Olympic Games athlete from the great lumber lands of Washington has bit the dust, more or less sensa' tionally, in almost every one of his pictures.

He was the prospector who got killed by bandits in "Treasure of the Sierra Madre." He got himself pumped full of lead in "Cheyenne." Errol Flynn plotted his death at! the hands of marauding redskins in "Silver River." And he was shot down like a dog in his latest drama, "Smart Girls Don't Talk." The latter demise, Bennett believes, was his most spectacular to date. He rolled down 'a long flight of stairs after taking a crossfire of slugs from revolvers and tommy guns. It was more than spectacular to Bennett, because he scorned a stuntman double, and did the toppling himself, to the tune of one twisted thumb and one black and blue hip. Bennett recalls escaping fieath in but one picture, "A Stolen Life" with Bette Davis. "And the only reason I didn't die in that one," he said, "was because Miss Davis' killing looks weren't lethal." "sus- penseful," to describe "Cry of the City," the melodrama which arrived at the State Theater yesterday. The words are well-deserved, they are not exaggerated, in short, they fit the bill, for 20th- century Fox has reached a new high in its series of news-realism films with this offering.

With Victor Mature as the hunter, and Richard Conte as the hunted, the picture plays out the game' of cat-and-mouse against a background of New York's side streets. The force of Robert Siodmak's di rection stands behind the movie, giv ing it the impact of down-to-earth realism which makes it a personal experience for the watcher, that in itself one of the most severe tests a picture can undergo. "Cry of the City," comes through with flying colors as scene after scene of in trigue and drama is unfolded. Briefly, the story is that of an escaped gangster's last desperate attempt to beat the law, and Conte brings to the Martin Rome part a portrayal that undoubtedly will send him zooming toward stardom. He plays it restrainedly, never getting out of bounds, but convincing the audience he is the desperate but sly criminal who can wield either gun or smile with equanimity when the situation demands.

Mature Is Tops Mature, with his performance of the thoughtful, sensitive homicide officer, Candella, achieves a rightful place in the top ranks of Hollywood's dramatic stars. The "gorgeous hunk nf man" sr nhipptinnnhlp tn Imany moviegoers in his early career, has been abandoned, and in his stead stands a highly competent ac-i tor. One factor which makes "Cry of the City" a fine motion picture js the every-day realism, in which characters are average men and wo-! men, livinu ordinary lives until1 crime strikes in their midst. They react as ordinary folk would react and therein lies the picture's claim to acclaim. "FOOTBALL MAGIC" By HUBBARD COBB Your Handy Man Gutter Troubles As a general rule, few people ever take the time and trouble to understand the gutters and downspouts around their house. This is probably the reason Why so many people part company with these bits of equipment in a few years, or vice versa. It is important to keep tree leaves, birds' nests and other debris from collecting in either the gutters or down spouts. An accumulation of leaves in a gutter will, or at leant can, absorb enough moisture so that the weight is too much for the gutter and it pulls loose. Even if this doesn't happen the wet leaves in the gutter will be an invitation for either rust or rot to get to work.

Many down spouts become clogged with leaves or nests and so they fail to drain. When the water inside freezes, the down spout splits and you are out a few dollars or so. It's a very good idea sweep out your gutters from time to time especially at this season of the year when the leaves are falling. You can get little wire cages to fit over the top of the down spouts that will keep any foreign matter from getting into them. If you have a lot of shade trees around the place it might even pay to cover the entire gutter with some wide mesh wire.

This will keep leaves from getting into the gutter and consequently save you a lot of bothersome sweeping. you have a small home repair problem on which you wish a pergonal reply, write to Mr. Cobb and enclose a stamped, self-addressed envelope. REOPENING PIZZA Open 6 P. M.
