and gave us a tremendous amount of momentum in the second quarter" Appalachian State coach Jerry Moore said defense really did some things that pressured them into some early With Scott Satterfield on to replace Arnold at quarterback the Mountaineers nearly scored again marching to the Aggies five before time expired in the first half Satterfield (eight of 16 for 170 yards passing) did lead Appalachian State on a pair of second-half touchdown drives Tailback Chip Hooks (20 carries for 109 yards) finished one scoring on a 1 7-yard scamper in the third quarter and wide receiver Clyde Ever-ette hauled in a 65-yard pass from Satterfield for the final Mountaineer touchdown By DAVID COULSON Special Correspondent BOONE Appalachian State took the high ground from the opening moments of Saturday's non-conference game against NC and never looked back on the way to a 45-0 win at Kidd Brewer Stadium The defense led by linebackers Larry Dennis and Dexter Coakley and cornerback Matt Stevens held the high-octane Aggies attack to minus-13 yards of offense in the first half and without a first down until four minutes 27 seconds remained in the third quarter The Aggies (2-1) had rolled up 91 points and 834 yards of offense in their first two games but Appalachian State (1-1) limited to 87 yards and seven first downs The Mountaineers also sacked Aggies quarterback Maseo Bolin five times "They lost their will to Coakley said of the offense wished we had another quarter to go we were having that much fun out there" With terrific field position in the first half the Mountaineers were not hampered by the rainy conditions scoring early and often Senior quarterback Andy Arnold (seven of 12 for 69 yards passing) threw a pair of touchdown passes and led the Mountaineers to a 31-0 lead before taking the rest of the day off late in the first half with a strained thigh The worst field position was their own 42 in the first half and never penetrated beyond its own 26 Even with such domination the Aggies could have stayed alive in the first half but for one interception that was called back and another that wished it could have had back Trailing 3-0 early in the second quarter defensive back Curtis Bur-gins appeared to stop an Appalachian State drive with an intercep Florida State NC AST: Hickman 10-32 Rodman 6-25 Perry 9-24 Johnson 2-9 Searcy had only a short 37-yard drive for their next score a 10-yard run by Rock Preston with 5:59 left in the half to make it 35-0 Warrick Dunn capped Florida next drive a 68-yarder with a 5-yard touchdown run with 1:43 left in the half to bring it to 42-0 LaRue was knocked from the game with a concussion late in the first half and redshirt freshman David Cerchio finished the game Florida State added a third quarter touchdown with 2:03 left when Stark hit fullback Dennis Andrews with a 17-yard pass to make it 49-0 Wake Forest did force Florida State to punt for the first time in the game in the third quarter but sustain a drive The Deacons had another chance to score when cornerback Major Griffey intercepted Kanell early in the third quarter and returned it to the 30 But again Hollows missed a 31-yard field goal to kill the chance Deacons safety Richard Good-pasture intercepted Stark later in the third and returned it 47 yards to the 25 and finally got on the scoreboard on a 1-yard run by
